Job description

Introductory text

Have you (almost) completed your Mechatronics level 3 education? Are you looking for a position within the Defense organization that aligns with this? Do you want to work with advanced equipment? And do you want to see some of the world? Our technical specialists in the Technical Service ensure that all technical installations on board a naval ship or submarine are always functioning perfectly. As a technician, you are broadly deployable on board a naval ship and are a specialist in your field.

As a Junior Officer Marine Technician, you will work not only with sensors, weapons, and command systems (communication systems, computers, and networks) typically found on a naval ship, but also with platform systems (propulsion systems, power supply systems, the ship's hull, and other supporting systems) that are also present on other vessels.

What you will do

You and your teammates will work on the maintenance of various systems, troubleshooting any malfunctions, monitoring equipment, and keeping track of fuel, oil, weapon, or ammunition consumption. You will work and live together with colleagues and friends on board.

As a junior officer, you will serve in the rank of corporal. As a corporal, you must possess leadership capabilities. Because you are also a military member, you will demonstrate your leadership not only when resolving malfunctions but also during the execution of other tasks on board. This can include during fire and damage control, as well as when docking the ship or conducting a boarding.

A corporal in the Technical Service is a jack-of-all-trades as a technician, leader, and military member! It is a varied job where you regularly perform under time pressure, but where there is also room for sports and relaxation.

Note: there are different start dates throughout the year. After applying, you will receive a personal application file that includes a reporting date. This is a fictitious date and therefore not correct. The start date for which you are eligible will be determined later. This depends, among other things, on the results of the psychological assessment, the medical examination, and the security investigation that are part of the application process. Once all these components have been successfully completed, your start date will be discussed and finalized. Participation in the various training courses depends on your own progress and available spots. Bureau EVC will also contact you. Based on previous work experience and/or diplomas, they will investigate whether you can receive exemptions within your training program.

PLUS POINTS OF THIS FUNCTION

  • Salary: your gross base salary, combined with allowances, our favorable travel expenses, pension, and health insurance scheme, results in a pleasant net amount.
  • Work environment: you will never be part of such a close-knit team of colleagues as you will be at Defense.
  • Career advancement opportunities: Defense is not only an employer but also a large training institute where you can follow courses to grow personally and professionally.

Where you will work

Your training as a Junior Officer Marine Technician begins as a Sailor 1st Class with a Maritime Military Training of approximately 5 weeks. You will learn general ship tasks, such as docking ships in port and ship maintenance, among other things. Additionally, there is a strong focus on team building and sports. Afterward, you will undergo a 3-week training course where you will train in fire and damage control.

Subsequently, you will start your technical vocational training. This begins with a basic training (fundamental techniques) of approximately 17 weeks at the Royal Netherlands Navy Technical Training Center (KMTO) in Den Helder.

This is followed by an internship of approximately 20 weeks on board a ship, where you will gain extensive experience in working and living on a naval ship. During this period, you will also acquire practical experience in all onboard techniques and increasingly gain insight into your future role as a technician.

After the internship, there is a 6-week period in which you will develop your leadership skills necessary as a corporal in the Technical Service. Afterward, you will specialize in an outflow profile. The choice of an outflow profile will consider both your preference and the organization's needs. This is followed by a period of approximately 20 weeks, during which you will take technical subjects (modules) for your outflow profile.

This is again followed by an internship of 22 weeks within your outflow profile, followed by a 3-week cadre training in fire and damage control. Upon successful completion of these training courses and internships, you will be promoted to corporal. If necessary, there will be an additional 8-week period with training specific to your onboard function.

The complete modular training to become a Junior Officer Marine Technician lasts 1.8 years. By receiving exemptions based on previously obtained diplomas or demonstrable work experience, you can skip (large) parts of the training. Afterward, you will be ready to be deployed on board.
