Introduction

Have you (almost) completed your VeVa Mechatronics level 2 education? Are you now looking for a position with Defense that aligns with it? Do you want to take your technical talents to a higher level? A technical company like the navy cannot do without a professional Technical Service. Together with your teammates, you are responsible for all (electro)technical installations on board our ships. Think of propulsion systems, power supply systems, radar systems, and weapon systems.

What you will do

As a Sailor Mechanic, you are indispensable on board ships and submarines of the Royal Netherlands Navy. You ensure that systems continue to work, even under difficult circumstances. For this, you will receive good training that continues throughout your career. During the training, you will learn what makes a warship truly special: continuing the mission until the objective is achieved.

During sailing, under normal circumstances, you will work on the control, operation, and maintenance of various onboard installations. You will learn how these installations and armament work and how to use them optimally when needed. Many systems work automatically, but you know what to do if something goes wrong. In case of a malfunction, you intervene quickly and safely so that the ship remains deployable and the mission can continue. You always work in a team and are one of the first to be deployed in case of onboard emergencies. This can be in engine rooms, but also with weapon, sensor, and communication systems on deck. You work on systems together with a technical specialist. You will also have the opportunity to ultimately demonstrate your MBO work and thinking level or obtain an MBO diploma through an EVC process.

After your enlistment, you can be on board a sailing ship after just 3 months! Or eventually on a submarine if you want to take on that challenge. Variety is guaranteed, as no port is the same.

Where you will work

Before you start as a Sailor Mechanic, you and your future colleagues and friends will first undergo comprehensive training. Training that will benefit you for the rest of your life. It begins with basic training of approximately 8 weeks, including initial maritime military formation. You will learn, among other things, general ship tasks. Such as tasks related to mooring ships in port, ship maintenance, and you will train in firefighting and damage control. Sailing on a submarine is also possible!

Then you will start your first vocational training. This is a general technical training. It lasts 5 weeks. You will receive the theory needed to perform your job on board and you will already be engaged in practical tasks on board 70% of the time. You will learn, among other things, how to read technical drawings, tool knowledge, operate measuring instruments, and perform maintenance on systems and installations. Once you have completed this academic part, you will set sail. However, we won't throw you in at the deep end immediately. You will first carry out various assignments under supervision for 4 months, a so-called learning task book. This way, you will quickly learn all parts of the ship and your tasks. If you successfully complete your learning task book, you will become a Sailor 1 of the Technical Service and receive a certificate from the Royal Netherlands Navy Technical Training. Afterwards, you will rotate and perform various tasks within the Technical Service on the ship. Depending on your assignment, you will work with propulsion systems, energy technology, weapons, platform technology, sensors, and networks. During this period, versatility in technology is central!

Your starting salary depends on your age, education level, and experience. As your knowledge and experience grow, your salary will increase accordingly. During your period of service (including your initial training), you will also build up an annual (gross) appointment premium/bonus, in addition to your salary. This will be paid out at the end of your period of service, unless you wish to receive an advance payment in the meantime.

With a full-time employment contract, you are entitled to 23-30 days of leave per year, depending on your age. Do you have days left over? You can carry them over to the next year under certain conditions.

After your promotion to corporal, you are still a technician, but you are also a military supervisor. Together you carry out the technical work.

By acquiring knowledge, experience, and regular further training, you can grow into a troubleshooting mechanic with the rank of sergeant non-commissioned officer.
