Have you (almost) completed your VeVa Maritime Level 2 training? Do you want to sail the world's oceans with a ship? And contribute to peace and security? Communication and IT are indispensable parts of naval work. Do you want to contribute to that? Then apply as a Sailor Operational Service Communications. This will lay a solid foundation for a career in ICT.

What you will do

As a Sailor in the Operational Service Communications, you are the connecting link on board the ship or ashore. You ensure that information reaches the right people on time. Together with your colleagues, you manage the computer networks and the fully automated communication systems of the navy. Most transmitters, receivers, and satellite communication systems are operated remotely: from the bridge, the command center, or the radio room. Communication is a broad term for us. In addition to satellite connections, computer networks, and radio connections, it also includes regular mail. And the messages we send can range from a personal letter or a simple email to strategic information for the headquarters during operations at sea.

Please note: There are multiple intake moments (start dates) per year. The intake date you are eligible for will be determined later. This depends, among other things, on the results of the Psychological Examination, the Medical Examination, and the security screening. As soon as all parts of the application process have been successfully completed, the start date will be discussed and confirmed with you.

Where you will work

You will work on the bridge, in the command center, or in the radio room of one of our navy ships that can be deployed worldwide. Or you will work in a shore-based center.

After joining, you will first follow basic training, which includes initial maritime military training. During this training, you will learn, among other things, general ship tasks, such as ship maintenance, tasks related to mooring ships in port, and you will train in firefighting and damage control. Subsequently, you will start your first vocational training. After completing this, you will complete an 8-month internship on board and carry out assignments under supervision. Here you will gain practical experience in all onboard techniques and become acquainted with working and living on board a navy ship. Finally, you can further specialize in network management.

As a Military member, you will participate in various exercises. Additionally, you must consider that, like any Military member, you may be deployed.

Your starting salary depends on your age, education level, and experience. As your knowledge and experience increase, your salary will also grow. In addition to your salary, as a military member, you will receive various structural and incidental allowances. The salaries mentioned on werkenbijdefensie.nl already include the VEB allowance. During your service obligation (including your initial training), you will also build up an annual (gross) retention bonus/bonus, in addition to your salary. This will be paid out at the end of your service obligation, unless you wish to receive an advance payment in the meantime.

With a full-time contract, you are entitled to 23-30 days of leave per year, depending on your age. Do you have days left over? You can carry them over to the next year under certain conditions.

As a Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) Communications, you will work on communication in the area around the ship. Additionally, you will supervise your colleagues.

As a senior NCO, you will increasingly focus on supervising colleagues and supporting the command.
