What you will do

Submarines are seen, but often also unseen in many places around the world. They make as little noise or emit as few signals as possible. This way, they can efficiently defend or disable other ships, or gather intelligence. Unseen deployment and support of Special Forces during special operations is also a task of submarines. As a Sailor OD (Submarine Service), you operate the sensors on board that are used for navigation and mapping the surroundings. You do this, of course, to ensure the boat doesn't hit anything. With this sonar equipment, all sounds from the surroundings are also picked up; sounds made by passing ships to conversations people have. Enemy submarines can also be detected with sonar. Besides operating the sonar equipment, a Sailor OD is also at the helm to ensure the boat stays at the correct depth. On board a submarine, you work with a small team, which means you can also be deployed for other tasks, such as acting as a firefighter on board. Work on board naturally continues twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, so watch duties are also performed during the night and on weekends.

Where you will work

You will work on one of the Navy's submarines, which can be deployed worldwide. But you will, of course, start with training. This consists of a task book and an exercise book. In the task book, you will learn everything about the ship and about yourself. Once you have completed the task book, you will become a Sailor First Class. In the exercise book, you will become thoroughly acquainted with all onboard systems so that you know what to do during exercises and emergencies. If you successfully complete this, you will earn your Flipper. That is the insignia of the Submarine Service, a sign that you truly belong.

The work is carried out within the Operational Service (OD) on board a submarine (OZBT) at the Operational Fleet Units (OPE VLOOT), under the Maritime Headquarters ABNL of the Operations Directorate of the Fleet Command. The OD is responsible for the execution of the operational deployment of the ship. The main location of an OZBT is Den Helder. The objective of OPE VLOOT is to provide operationally ready sailing military capacity for the entire spectrum of force for safety on and from the sea. This is done, whether or not as an integral part of units composed of ground-based and/or amphibious units. This work takes place in a six-on, six-off schedule, with the maximum underwater period being approximately four weeks.

Your starting salary depends on your age, educational level, and experience. As your knowledge and experience increase, so does your salary. During your term of service (including your initial training), you will accrue an annual (gross) appointment premium/bonus in addition to your salary. This will be paid out at the end of your term of service, unless you wish to receive an advance payment in the meantime.

With a full-time employment contract, depending on your age, you are entitled to 23-30 vacation days per year. Do you have days left over? Then you can carry them over to the next year under certain conditions.
