Introductory text

Have you (almost) completed your VeVa Maritime Level 2 training? And do you see a future for yourself at sea? As an Operational Service Sailor Command Center at the Royal Netherlands Navy, you will act as the eyes and ears of a naval vessel.

What you will do

As an Operational Service Sailor Command Center, you will be involved in the sailing and fighting of the ship. Together with your teammates, you will keep a close eye on a large area around the ship. You will do this by watching from the bridge, but also with high-tech equipment. For example, as a sea and air image operator, you will monitor the radar images of sea and air traffic near the ship. As a sea and underwater image operator, you will do the same for sea traffic and operate the sonar equipment to detect submarines.

Please note: There are multiple induction dates (start dates) per year. The induction date you are eligible for will be determined later. This depends, among other things, on the results of the Psychological Assessment, the Medical Examination, and the Security Investigation. Once all parts of the application process have been successfully completed, the start date will be discussed and confirmed with you.

Where you will work

You will work on the bridge and in the command center of our naval vessels, which sail all over the world.

After starting, you will first follow the basic training, which includes initial maritime military training. During this training, you will learn general ship tasks, such as ship maintenance, tasks when docking ships in port, and you will train in fire and damage control. Subsequently, you will start your first vocational training. After completion, you will do an internship on board for 8 months and carry out assignments under supervision. Here you will gain practical experience in all onboard techniques and become acquainted with working and living on board a naval ship.

As a military member, you will participate in various exercises. In addition, you must take into account that, like any military member, you may be deployed abroad.

Your starting salary depends on your age, educational level, and experience. As your knowledge and experience increase, your salary will also grow. In addition to your salary, as a military member, you will receive various structural and incidental allowances. The salaries mentioned on werkenbijdefensie.nl already include the VEB allowance. During your period of service (including your initial training), you will build up an annual (gross) appointment bonus, in addition to your salary. This will be paid out at the end of your period of service, unless you wish to receive an advance payment in the meantime.

With a full-time contract, you are entitled to 23-30 days of leave per year, depending on your age. Do you have days left over? Then you can carry them over to the next year under certain conditions.
