As a Marine, you are always prepared to go the extra mile. Wherever in the world, you operate as one team in the most diverse circumstances. As a Marine Communications Specialist (COMMSPEC), you are responsible for all digital and radio connections within your team so that communication during missions always proceeds flawlessly.

What you will do

As a Marine COMMSPEC, you are an important link within every mission. You work with modern communication and IT systems that are essential for the safety and effectiveness of your unit. You are responsible for setting up and maintaining the communication connections that are important for your unit, for example via radio or satellite. From requesting air support to medical evacuations — you ensure that every message arrives. As a Marine, you participate in international peace operations of NATO and the United Nations. You can be deployed anywhere in the world within 48 hours. In addition, you contribute to the defense of the Kingdom, including on Curaçao, Aruba, and Sint Maarten. It is important that you are always ready for deployment. Therefore, you must be prepared for anything, both physically and mentally. That is why you train intensively, both physically and mentally, in the most diverse circumstances: from the jungle to the Arctic region. In short: as a Marine, you expand your world — literally and figuratively.

Where you will work

The motto of the Royal Netherlands Marine Corps is ‘Qua Patet Orbis’ — “as wide as the world stretches”. You can be deployed anywhere in the world for peace operations or missions. Even during training, you are often far from home: for example, during mountain, winter, or jungle training. To become a Marine COMMSPEC, you will first follow training in Rotterdam. The Marine training consists of a basic part — the Elementary Military Training Marines (EMV MARNS) — and a technical part — the First Technical Training Marine General (EVO MARNALG). During this intensive period, you alternate training weeks at the barracks with field exercises and an amphibious exercise on Texel. You will develop strength, discipline, and perseverance — and learn to operate under any circumstance, as part of a close-knit team. After successful completion, you will start the technical training to become a Communications Specialist (COMMSPEC). Afterward, you will start working within the Signals service branch, at one of the operational units in the Netherlands or on the Caribbean islands.

Your starting salary depends on your age, education level, and experience. As your knowledge and experience increase, so does your salary. In addition, as a military member, you receive various structural and incidental allowances on top of your salary. The salaries mentioned on werkenbijdefensie.nl already include the VEB allowance. During your service obligation (including your initial training), you will build up an annual (gross) hiring bonus/bonus each year, in addition to your salary. You will receive this at the end of your service obligation, unless you wish to receive an advance payment in the meantime.

With a full-time contract, you are entitled to 23-30 vacation days per year, depending on your age. Do you have days left over? You can carry them over to the next year under certain conditions.

A next step is the rank of Corporal Signals Service. You will manage the Marine 'signallers' within your unit.
