Job description
Membrey Short Hauls (Pty) Ltd is seeking an experienced and results-driven Transport Operations Manager to oversee its fast-paced, 24-hour transport operations in Clairwood, Durban. Key responsibilities: Manage daily transport operations, including containerised, breakbulk, local and long-haul movements
Lead and supervise operations controllers, drivers and support staff
Plan and allocate vehicles, trailers, drivers and loads efficiently
Monitor vehicle movements, turnaround times, deliveries and customer service levels
Ensure effective communication between clients, drivers, controllers, depots, ports and the workshop
Manage operational delays, breakdowns, accidents and emergency callouts
Ensure proper shift handovers and accurate operational reporting
Monitor driver performance, productivity, fuel consumption and vehicle utilisation
Ensure trip sheets, delivery documents and operational records are completed correctly
Coordinate with the workshop to minimise downtime and maintain fleet availability
Investigate operational incidents, complaints and service failures
Implement corrective actions and continuously improve operational performance
Ensure compliance with health and safety requirements, company policies and transport legislation
Provide regular operational and performance reports to senior management Minimum requirements: At least five years’ management experience in transport or logistics operations
Strong experience in container movements, port operations, breakbulk and general cargo
Sound knowledge of Durban ports, container depots and surrounding transport routes
Proven ability to manage a 24-hour operation, controllers and large driver teams
Strong leadership, planning, decision-making and problem-solving skills
Excellent customer service and communication abilities
Computer literacy, including Microsoft Excel, email, reporting and vehicle-tracking systems
Ability to work under pressure and respond to operational emergencies
Willingness to be available after hours, on weekends and public holidays when required
Valid driver’s licence
Reliable personal transport to and from work
Contactable employment references
Clear criminal record
Must be a South African citizen The successful candidate must be highly organised, hands-on and capable of taking full responsibility for the safe, efficient and profitable operation of the transport fleet. Location: Clairwood, Durban
