Job description

Jointly develop new solutions from industrial challenges.

How do we shape the factory of the future – with more reliable production processes, intelligent automation, higher efficiency, and more flexible manufacturing systems? Which technologies create real added value in this process, and how do they result in functioning solutions?

At the Smart Systems Hub, we answer such questions together with industrial companies, developers, and technology partners. In interdisciplinary teams, we develop and test innovative solutions – from the initial idea to a functional prototype.

This is what we are looking for you: a technically adept project manager (m/f/d) who understands industrial problems, brings together different perspectives, and co-designs and drives technical innovation projects.

About us

The Smart Systems Hub in Dresden is a co-innovation center for industrial automation and digitalization. Together with companies, research institutions, and technology partners, we develop and test new solutions for connected production.

Our projects combine technologies from the fields of software, hardware, Industrial IoT, data ecosystems, robotics, and artificial intelligence.

Your role with us

You will work at the interface between industrial customers, engineering, and technology partners. You will combine technical project management with requirements engineering, system understanding, and a strong hands-on mentality.

Your daily work is diverse: sometimes you will accompany a development project lasting several months, sometimes you will conceptualize a technology sprint, build a demonstrator together with the team, or support a three-day Thin[gk]athon.

Your tasks in technical project management

  • Lead industrial development projects: Together with customers and development teams, you will coordinate multi-month projects using suitable agile or hybrid approaches – from requirements analysis and technical conception to implementation and validation.

  • Design technology sprints: You will structure industrial use cases, evaluate technological solution options, and develop initial solution approaches and prototypes together with interdisciplinary teams.

  • Build demonstrators: You will conceptualize functional end-to-end demonstrators with our technology partners, integrating hardware, software, interfaces, and existing open-source components yourself.

  • Accompany co-innovation formats: You will technically prepare Thin[gk]athons and Hackathons, support development teams, and help realize initial functioning solutions in a short time.

  • Develop requirements and architectures: Together with customers and developers, you will translate industrial problems into technical requirements, system architectures, interfaces, and data flows.

  • Evaluate technologies: You will research suitable solutions, compare standard products and custom developments, and assess their feasibility, integration capability, and development effort.

  • Provide technical support to development teams: You will discuss technical decisions with specialists at eye level, identify integration risks, and support the implementation and evaluation of results.

  • Drive projects forward: You will coordinate work packages, milestones, resources, and project partners, combine iterative development cycles with reliable planning, and ensure transparent, solution-oriented collaboration.

What you bring with you

  • A degree or vocational training in computer science, electrical engineering, automation technology, mechatronics, or a comparable technical field – alternatively, corresponding practical experience.

  • Experience in agile or hybrid management of technical development, integration, or innovation projects, as well as in collaborating with customers and interdisciplinary teams.

  • A strong technical system understanding and knowledge of modern industrial IT/OT architectures – from shop floor to machine control, SCADA, and MES to ERP, Edge, and cloud systems. You can quickly grasp and clearly present their interplay as well as hardware, software, and data architectures.

  • Knowledge in requirements engineering and the ability to derive technical solution approaches from customer requirements.

  • Solid fundamentals in software development, industrial network and IoT connectivity, and system integration. You understand the interplay of software components, APIs, and interfaces and can use existing frameworks and open-source building blocks to implement simple applications and technical prototypes yourself.

  • Technological curiosity, initiative, and enjoyment of practical implementation. You can remain structured and capable of action even with unclear or contradictory requirements, verify assumptions, and adapt solutions to new findings. You use modern AI-supported development tools and can critically evaluate their results.

  • German (C1/native speaker) and English (fluent)

This would be additionally helpful

It is particularly helpful if you can technically classify technologies from the following areas, evaluate their application possibilities and limitations, and transfer them to industrial use cases. Practical experience with individual technologies is a plus – we do not expect deep specialized knowledge in all areas.

  • Industrial IoT & Embedded Systems: Sensor technology, microcontrollers like ESP32, industrial communication protocols like OPC UA and MQTT, as well as machine and plant integration.

  • Software & Rapid Prototyping: Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, open-source frameworks and libraries like Angular, React, or Bootstrap, as well as Node-RED, REST APIs, Docker, and cloud services like AWS or Azure.

  • Industrial Future Technologies: Computer Vision, Industrial AI, Data Spaces and Manufacturing-X, Robotics, Simulation, or Digital Twins.

What awaits you with us

  • Diverse innovation projects with industrial companies, including those from semiconductor manufacturing, mechanical, and plant engineering.

  • The opportunity to practically test new technologies and apply them together with experienced specialists.

  • An interdisciplinary team, a strong technology and industry network, and plenty of room for your own ideas and design.

Benefits

We want you to feel comfortable with us from the start – professionally, personally, and in your daily work. Therefore, in addition to a modern workplace, we offer you attractive additional benefits and flexible working conditions.

Flexible working

  • Remote work
With us, you have the opportunity to work remotely flexibly and manage your daily work independently.

  • Work equipment provided
We will of course provide you with the work equipment necessary for your role.

Vacation & days off

  • 30 days of vacation per year
In addition to the statutory 20 days of vacation, you receive 10 contractually regulated additional vacation days. This gives you a total of 30 vacation days per year.

  • KO days without a doctor's visit
Sometimes you just need a day to get back on your feet. Therefore, you can take up to 2 KO days per illness without a doctor's certificate.

Mobility & Commute

  • Bike leasing
Through our bike leasing offer, you can lease your desired bicycle conveniently and tax-efficiently – ideal for your commute or leisure.

  • TeilAuto account for business trips
A TeilAuto account is available for business trips, allowing you to be mobile easily and flexibly.

Well-being in the office

  • Beverages in the office
Beverages are available free of charge in the office.

  • Candy bar
For a quick energy boost, we have our candy bar.

Team & Community

  • Regular team events
We value good collaboration. Therefore, regular team events take place where exchange, fun, and shared experiences are the focus.

Sounds like you?

You don't have to have an answer to every technical question immediately. But you enjoy asking the right questions, understanding new technologies, and developing functioning solutions together with others.

Then become part of the Smart Systems Hub. We look forward to getting to know you!
