Technical Operations Manager - MSR/Construction Industry (m/f/d)

As VOLENTUM Personalberatung, we are seeking, on behalf of our client, a Technical Operations Manager (m/f/d) for a responsible key position within an established medium-sized company in the technical building equipment sector.

Our client is an owner-managed family business with around 100 employees and a long-standing market presence. The company advises, plans, implements, and supports customized solutions in the areas of heating, sanitary, ventilation, and cooling technology. The service portfolio is complemented by solutions in water and wastewater treatment as well as in the field of renewable energies.

Challenging projects for industrial, commercial, and private clients are managed – from planning through execution to subsequent service. The company's main location is in Herzberg am Harz, but projects are realized regionally and nationwide.

In the course of an organizational realignment, a leadership personality is sought who will operatively manage the technical organization, further develop existing structures, and act as a central interface between management, executives, and project organization.

Residing in Lower Saxony or Berlin can be advantageous, as a significant portion of the projects are located in these regions, which can reduce the number of necessary overnight stays – depending on the specific project situation.

Tasks

As Technical Operations Manager (m/f/d), you will assume a central role directly below the management. Your focus will be on the overall operational management of the technical organization as well as the economic and organizational leadership of project business.

Your key tasks include:

• Overall operational management of the technical areas based on relevant key figures

• Responsibility for the successful execution of larger projects regarding quality, deadlines, costs, results, and liquidity

• Leadership and further development of subordinate managers and employees

• Management and further development of construction and project management as well as other operational areas

• Establishment and implementation of a Project Management Office (PMO)

• Management of the entire project portfolio and prioritization of critical projects

• Overall resource, capacity, schedule, and personnel planning

• Regular analysis of project statuses, cost developments, results, liquidity, as well as opportunities and risks

• Initiation of appropriate countermeasures for project deviations

• Participation in important construction site, project, supplementary claim, schedule, and escalation meetings

• Support of project and construction management in significant operational, personnel, or scheduling challenges

• Review and evaluation of supplementary claims, additional costs, construction time claims, and significant execution issues

• Involvement in the selection and evaluation of subcontractors and suppliers

• Participation in important customer, partner, and project meetings

• Further development of project standards, reporting structures, controlling processes, and digital tools

• Regular reporting and close coordination with management and commercial management

You will act not as a technical specialist for every detail, but rather as an experienced leader, coordinator, and entrepreneurially thinking manager who brings together complex projects and diverse specialist areas.

The role involves regular presence at the company site as well as at nationwide construction sites. Correspondingly, a high willingness to travel should be present. After successful onboarding, a relevant proportion of mobile work is also possible.

Qualifications

For this demanding leadership task, we are looking for a personality with strong entrepreneurial thinking, leadership experience, and a sound understanding of the processes of larger construction and plant engineering projects.

Ideally, you bring the following:

• Completed engineering degree, for example in MSR (Building Services Engineering), utility, building, or construction technology, or a comparable qualification

• Alternatively, a qualification as a technician or master craftsman with corresponding relevant professional experience

• Several years of professional experience in the construction industry or in plant engineering, ideally in the field of technical building equipment

• Leadership experience in a comparable position within a medium-sized company

• Experience in managing challenging projects and dealing with large or professional clients

• Strong business acumen and confidence in handling project key figures

• Experience in managing budgets, costs, results, schedules, and resources

• Basic knowledge of construction law and VOB (Vergabe- und Vertragsordnung für Bauleistungen - German standard for public construction contracts)

• Proficient in MS Office and experience with ERP and project management systems

• Experience in establishing or further developing structures and processes

• High communication and decision-making skills

• Cooperative leadership style combined with the ability to make clear decisions when necessary

• High willingness to travel nationwide

The position is particularly interesting for experienced project or department managers who are seeking the next step into overarching overall responsibility. Experienced operations managers from smaller organizations are also suitable.

Relevant professional backgrounds can include, among others, from the fields of SHK/MSR (Sanitary, Heating, Air Conditioning/Building Services Engineering), HVAC plant engineering, building and utility technology, as well as from MSR units of general contractors or comparable construction companies.
