Job description

Are you that ambitious Team Leader / R&D engineer who likes to help civil and military aircraft fly safely, sustainably, and competitively? Do you want to develop yourself further and do you get excited about technology, innovation, and sustainability? We are looking for a team leader for the department.

What will you do?

In a world where aerospace systems are becoming increasingly complex, it is important to develop innovative solutions to ensure safety and efficiency. At NLR, we work on the development of advanced aerospace systems. We use software modeling and simulation to understand and optimize the behavior of complex systems.

Our expertise in hardware testing and operational support (OPS) ensures that our solutions are not only theoretically sound but also practically applicable and robust.

Interest in Electromagnetic Warfare (EW) is increasing, with the need to protect our aerospace systems from electromagnetic threats. Therefore, we are looking for a team leader within our new Aerospace Systems Electronic Warfare (ASEW) department.

As an EW Team Leader, you will lead a team of professionals with expertise in the design, development, and testing of aerospace systems with a focus on Electronic Warfare.

Within our new Aerospace Systems Electromagnetic Warfare department, we are looking for an experienced and driven Team Leader to lead and inspire our team. The department focuses on developing innovative solutions for Electromagnetic Warfare (EW) and aims to support the Dutch and international aerospace industry.

As a Team Leader within our ASEW department, you will be responsible for leading and developing a team of specialists in the field of EW. You will work closely with the Department Manager and other teams within NLR to achieve our goals.

In consultation with the ASEW Department Manager, you will oversee one of the two Electromagnetic Warfare knowledge domains, namely Electronic Warfare Modelling and Simulation or Electronic Warfare Analyses.

In the role of team leader, you will remain actively and substantively involved in executing projects and will coordinate a team of technical colleagues and further develop and expand the facilities for which ASEW is responsible. So you are both a team leader and an R&D Engineer.

As a team leader…

As a team leader, you provide the team with everything necessary for your team's work to be successful. You are the direct supervisor of the colleagues concerned and also hold HR responsibility. You coach, guide, give and ask for feedback, and you take the lead when necessary.

In this way, you enable them to work optimally on projects and facilitate them where necessary. You ensure the strengthening of the knowledge position of the work area and the realization of activities/assignments for internal and external stakeholders.

You have an open and inspiring leadership style. Your colleagues feel free and supported and can develop well. A good team spirit is experienced. You ensure good alignment of the work area with the rest of ASEW and seek synergy with other departments within flight test and certification. You strengthen the collaborative relationships aimed at further maturing the team.

As an R&D Engineer…

As an R&D engineer EW, you contribute to making military and civil aviation safer, more sustainable, and more competitive. You work on aircraft, helicopters, and unmanned flying systems.

You support our domestic and international clients in achieving their goals. You conduct tests, generate models, and analyze results.

In the role of R&D engineer, you will lead or substantively contribute to project proposals, for example, for paid projects commissioned by an (external) stakeholder. These can also be research proposals for, for example, defense research calls.

Responsibilities

  • Leading and developing a team of specialists in the field of EW;

  • Collaborating with the ASEW Department Manager and other teams within NLR to achieve our goals;

  • Overseeing a knowledge domain (Electronic Warfare Modelling and Simulation or Electronic Warfare Analyses) with which you, together with the Department Manager, establish strategic goals for the team;

  • Inspiring and motivating team members to deliver their best work;

  • Coordinating projects and activities to achieve the department's goals.

What do you bring?

  • A completed Master's degree (WO) in a relevant discipline (e.g., aerospace engineering, electrical engineering, computer science);

  • At least 3 years of experience in a leadership role, preferably in the aerospace industry;

  • Demonstrable knowledge and experience in the field of EW;

  • Excellent communication skills in both Dutch and English (at least C1 level);

  • Strong leadership and coaching skills;

  • Ability to inspire and motivate a team to deliver their best work.

What do we offer you?

Working at NLR means working in a national and international high-tech environment. Collaboration and involvement are highly valued here. By giving you freedom and personal responsibility, you are best able to achieve groundbreaking innovations. Do you want to develop yourself both professionally and personally? You can do that at NLR as a learning organization, with an additional training budget, a mentor, internal coaches, and good contacts with vocational colleges (mbo's), universities of applied sciences (hbo's), and universities.

In addition to all this, we offer you:

  • The opportunity to contribute to complex and socially relevant issues;

  • Sufficient vacation and ATV days (a total of 45 for full-time employment) for a good work-life balance;

  • An end-of-year bonus of 8%;

  • A contribution towards your healthcare costs;

  • Additional paid parental leave;

  • The opportunity to develop yourself with training and courses that match your ambitions.

Your new work environment

Electromagnetic Warfare is a new department within Aerospace Systems, originating from the Defence Operations department. You will be the leader of a team of enthusiastic and driven professionals. You will work closely with other NLR departments, especially the department from which ASEW originated. The work is directly related to Defence, resilience, and the protection of the Netherlands and the Dutch armed forces.

You will work from our location in Amsterdam and will have a lot of contact with colleagues and partners within and outside NLR.

Koninklijke NLR has been a knowledge organization for over 100 years with the will and ambition to innovate. From that drive, we make the world of aerospace safer, more sustainable, more efficient, and more effective, and we stand for groundbreaking innovations.
