The Leipzig University of Applied Sciences (HTWK Leipzig) is one of the leading universities of applied sciences in Germany. Tandem Professorship (W 1) for Structural Engineering and Hybrid Construction Methods (m/f/d) with Tenure Track to W 2

Content Focus Areas

The professorship is to represent the teaching and research area of "Structural Engineering and Hybrid Construction Methods" for new construction as well as construction in existing buildings, covering the full scope of Bachelor's and Master's programs in Civil Engineering and Civil Engineering Management in the following areas:

  • Construction structures made of concrete, reinforced concrete, and prestressed concrete;
  • Construction with carbon and textile concrete;
  • Hybrid construction methods (timber-concrete composite, application of fiber-reinforced plastics);
  • Fiber concrete, and
  • Monitoring of building structures;

with associated teaching and continuing education events. Setting one's own priorities in teaching and research within the scope of the appointment area is expected.

Teaching Responsibilities

The tandem professorship includes a teaching load of 9 contact hours per semester. After successful tenure evaluation and transition to the permanent W2 professorship, the teaching load will be 18 contact hours per semester.

The responsibilities of the professorship in teaching also include:

  • the integration and further development of the represented teaching areas into the concept of digital planning and construction, as well as sustainable construction;
  • advising and taking over teaching events in related subject areas; and
  • regular participation in didactic and subject-specific further training events.

Research and Knowledge Transfer Responsibilities

The research focus is on the further development and strengthening of the scientific profile of the Institute for Concrete Construction (IfB), which is characterized by the three existing research groups: Structural Engineering, Sensors and Monitoring, and Sustainable Construction. It is expected that a concept for the further development of the Carbon Concrete Technology Center Germany, which is a defining feature of HTWK Leipzig, will be developed and implemented. The already excellent international networking of the IfB is to be further expanded. You will also be responsible for independently conducting research projects at the IfB.

During the period of the tandem professorship, you will also be responsible for the following tasks:

  • Participation in the management of the Institute for Concrete Construction;
  • independent application for publicly funded and/or privately financed research projects;
  • financial, personnel, organizational, and scientific management of research projects; and
  • taking over and further developing established continuing education and transfer formats.

The tasks listed here in the areas of teaching, research, knowledge transfer, as well as academic and non-academic engagement, form the basis for the evaluation agreement to be concluded amicably after the call is issued.

Employment and Qualification Requirements

You meet the employment and qualification requirements for a tandem professorship according to § 59 and § 66 of the Saxon Higher Education Act (SächsHSG). These include:

  • a completed university degree in the field of civil engineering (proven by certificate and diploma);
  • a completed doctorate in the field of appointment as proof of scientific qualification (proven by doctoral certificate) and corresponding publications;
  • pedagogical aptitude (proven by evaluations, certificates of participation in didactic further training, etc.); and
  • relevant experience in research and teaching.

The three years of professional experience outside the university, as required by § 59 Abs. 1 No. 4 letter c SächsHSG, which has a clear connection to the appointment area, must be acquired during the period of the tandem professorship. The institution at which applicants acquire the at least three years of professional practice outside the university must be sought independently by the applicants and must be definitively established upon issuance of the call. An expression of interest from the institution must be submitted with the application. HTWK Leipzig reserves the right to check whether the institution is in direct competition with HABAU Deutschland GmbH.

Furthermore, we expect:

  • profound theoretical knowledge in the field of appointment, proven by publications in specialist journals and scientific lectures at international conferences;
  • experience in successfully applying for research funding;
  • experience in the independent execution of research projects in the field of carbon concrete and
  • monitoring of construction structures.

Strong commitment to research and to acquiring third-party funding is assumed.

During the tandem professorship, initiating and supervising doctoral projects, as well as participating in national and international standardization and working groups, is desirable. After successful evaluation and transition to the W2 professorship, initiating and supervising doctoral projects and participating in national and international standardization and working groups will be expected.

Involvement in academic self-governance, as well as supervision of theses, internships, excursions, and student projects, is desirable. After transition to the W2 professorship, involvement will be expected.

You possess very good communication skills in written and spoken German and should also be able to conduct teaching events in English to support the internationalization of the university.

We request the submission of a teaching concept for the advertised tandem professorship with tenure track. Furthermore, future research concepts for the W2 regular professorship should be outlined.

At the latest seven months before the expiration of the fixed term, the tenure evaluation will be initiated in accordance with the regulations for the establishment, design, procedure, and evaluation of tandem professorships with tenure track at HTWK Leipzig (TTTO). The basis for the evaluation procedure is an evaluation agreement concluded by mutual consent before the start of employment, in which the development goals and expectations regarding the individual performance of the tandem professor are bindingly stipulated. Following successful tenure evaluation, appointment to a permanent W2 professorship will be made without a new job advertisement.

Employment will be on an employment contract basis. Transfer to civil servant status is possible after successful tenure evaluation and transition to the permanent W2 professorship.
