Public Affairs Internship at Burson
Do you want to gain experience at the intersection of politics, media, government, and business?
Burson stands for strategy and communication, with consultants engaged by clients when it really matters. With our experienced team of specialists, we operate at a high strategic level and help companies and organizations navigate the most complex situations: from strengthening or protecting reputations to responding to changing legislation, agenda-setting political themes, guiding mergers and acquisitions, product launches, or crisis communication. We are part of Burson Group, an international communication agency consisting of a large network with over 95 offices in more than 40 countries. Together, we are part of WPP: the largest marketing and communication company in the world. Since 2019, we have been located under one roof on our Amsteldok campus in Amsterdam. Additionally, we also have an office in The Hague in the Netherlands.
Public Affairs at Burson is much more than lobbying at the Binnenhof. In the current mediatocracy, policy is increasingly influenced by public opinion and political sentiments. This shifts the power: not only government and the market determine the agenda, but society itself as well. Our consultants help organizations respond to this dynamic: identifying societal trends, building support among diverse stakeholders, and developing strategies that are persuasive both politically and publicly.
As an integrated communication consultancy, we know how to strengthen Public Affairs with smart PR and targeted communication, so we reach the right audience, at the right time, through the right channel, with the right message. We therefore focus on influencing relevant stakeholders through a wide range of channels.
Burson offers a Public Affairs internship annually on February 1st and September 1st to a talented student.
What will you do?
As a Public Affairs intern, you will work on various projects and support our consultants. You will be introduced to many aspects of the work within a Public Affairs office and get a unique behind-the-scenes look at the political arena. You will learn how organizations represent their interests towards politics, government, and the media. In short: a versatile internship at the intersection of politics, government, media, and business.
Your responsibilities will include, among others:
- Monitoring news and politics: daily scanning of newspapers, trade journals, and opinion magazines for relevant news for our clients.
- Following parliamentary agendas: keeping track of meetings and debates in the House of Representatives and the Senate, identifying and summarizing relevant parliamentary documents.
- Reporting: live and post-debate reporting on political debates and collecting committee reports.
- Research and analysis: gathering information through databases and conducting analyses for our consultants.
- Stakeholder mapping: identifying and updating relevant political and administrative contacts.
- Support on various client projects: contributing to presentations, pitches, and strategic advice.
Who are you?
- You are pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree, for example in Political Science, Public Administration, History, European Studies, or International Relations (and are enrolled during the internship period).
- You have a strong interest in and knowledge of Dutch politics and societal issues.
- You are proactive, curious, and have strong analytical skills.
- You can clearly analyze and summarize complex information and have a fluent writing style.
- You master both the Dutch and English languages, both spoken and written.
- You can handle deadlines well and work accurately, even under pressure.
- You are available at least four days a week in the period from February 1st to June 30th.
What we offer
During your internship, you will receive a monthly internship fee of €650 (based on a full work week) and will be supervised by two colleagues. Every month, you will have a coaching session about your personal ambitions and desires. Halfway through your internship, there will be a mid-term feedback session where there is ample opportunity to indicate what else you want to get out of your internship. Furthermore, you can always approach other Young Professionals, consultants, and senior advisors with questions. Finally, your travel expenses will be reimbursed, and it is possible to occasionally work from home.
