Job description
As a Staff member at Matera, you will contribute to defining the backend technical vision and implementing it: you will set the standards, improve the DevX, and initiate structuring projects so that we build a higher quality product with greater velocity. Your impact will be measured across the entire technical team.
Specifically, your missions will be:
Define and evolve Matera's backend architecture long-term — modularization, design system, performance, clean architecture, DDD, etc.
Identify current technical limitations, propose solutions, and implement them with the team
Initiate and lead high-impact tech or product projects
Establish and promote backend code standards across all squads
Improve Developer Experience: AI adoption, tooling, CI, testing strategy, conventions, documentation
Mentor developers of all levels, elevate the collective skill level
Contribute to the overall technical vision alongside the CTO and other Staff members
Our Stack:
Frontend: React, Typescript, React Native (mobile), Jest, Playwright, Maestro
Backend: Ruby on Rails, Sidekiq, Rspec, Cucumber
PostgreSQL, Opensearch, Redis
Infrastructure: Kubernetes, Terraform
Our Organization:
Autonomous Squads – Squads of 5 developers with an EM, responsible for end-to-end maintenance of their domain, but also involved in very different domains for new feature creation.
AI-first – 100% of the code is generated by AI via Cursor and a plan orchestrator integrated into the repository. This is not a bonus, it's our way of working. We expect you to master these tools and know how to get the best out of them.
Collective Intelligence – Developers get involved early in product discussions. Being proactive is an expectation, not a bonus.
Pragmatism & Efficiency – Methodology close to Kanban. We deliver, we learn, we improve.
Flexibility – Flexible hours, remote possible with 2 days of office presence per week.
Adaptability – Our industry evolves quickly, and so does our organization. You must be comfortable with change, even seek it out — someone who is stimulated by novelty rather than destabilized by it.
Benefits:
Compensation: from €88,000 depending on profile and experience,
Location: Paris, Lyon, Annecy, Bordeaux, Marseille, Toulouse
Contract: Cadre forfait jour (Executive package with fixed working days)
Remote Work: 2 days of office presence per week
Onboarding & Development:
2 weeks of onboarding to understand Matera's operations and values, and role-specific onboarding,
Structured career path: weekly support from your manager, annual performance review, internal mobility encouraged
Transparent internal compensation policy.
Quality of Life
Parental support policy: a gentle return to work at 80% for 4 weeks (paid at 100%), as well as 5 additional days of leave per year for sick children,
Responsible Commute Time (TTR): 1 additional paid day off per year to favor responsible transportation for your vacation travel,
Menstrual leave
Sports: access to WellPass for affordable sports activities,
Cultural deals with the Leeto platform (discounts for cinema, museums, amusement parks...).
Legal Basis
Paid leave and RTT (Reduction of Working Time)
Health insurance & Swile Card - 50% covered
100% coverage for provident fund
Holiday bonus (SYNTEC)
50% coverage for transportation costs
A computer and equipment will be provided
Before going further, we encourage you to apply if the mission matches your interests, even if not all criteria are met. What we are looking for:
8+ years of experience as a Software Engineer with a strong Backend specialization and expertise in Ruby on Rails
You are comfortable with DevOps challenges and orchestration technologies (Kubernetes, Terraform)
You have a full-stack inclination to lead projects end-to-end
You are a technical leader who can both define a vision and rally the team towards it
Deep understanding of application performance, database, and infrastructure issues
You have strongly adopted AI in your work methods and continuously experiment to improve your efficiency and that of the team.
A strong product mindset with an obsession for delivering the best user experience
Bonus:
Previous experience as a Staff or Principal Engineer
Experience in React
Experience with a high-growth product
Experience with features connected to LLMs (Langchain/LangGraph/etc)
