Job description
About Scento
Scento is Europe's largest website for perfume decants. Founded in 2024, the company is headquartered in Paris at Place Vendôme and has a second office in Berlin. Scento offers more than 1,000 original designer and niche fragrances from a portfolio of 200 perfume houses as decants: 2 ml, 5 ml, and 8 ml vials, as well as a 30 ml bottle for most fragrances. With perfume samples of niche and designer fragrances, you can discover a scent before committing to a full bottle. Each perfume is an original from authorized European retailers, and each bottle undergoes a 12-point inspection upon arrival before being decanted in Scento's ISO-certified facility.
Scento serves customers in 27 European markets and ships to 26 EU countries. Scento's annual revenue in 2026 is over 30 million Euros, combining online and offline sales. On Scento.com, monthly sales of decants in September 2026 were 3.2 times higher than in January 2026. According to its own data, Scento sells over 3 million perfume decants per year, about one every 10 seconds. In November 2025, Scento announced an investment of 25 million Euros in perfume discovery in Europe over three years.
Your Role
Scento operates its own shop on Next.js and its own commerce backend on Medusa, Node.js, TypeScript, and PostgreSQL, plus a custom-built checkout on Stripe. This platform supports the sale of perfume samples, seasonal products like the perfume advent calendar, and gift sets across Europe.
As a Staff Engineer, you will shape its architecture. You will set technical standards, ensure pages load quickly and payments go through reliably, and elevate the entire engineering team. Success means: we deliver faster, the platform remains stable as traffic increases, and the best ideas from product and growth go live seamlessly.
Your Responsibilities
- You will design the architecture of Scento's commerce platform: Next.js storefront and Medusa backend on PostgreSQL.
- You will build and harden our custom checkout with Stripe, including multiple currencies and languages.
- You will lead in performance (Core Web Vitals), reliability, observability, and security.
- You will define engineering standards, review code, and mentor other engineers in their daily work.
- You will work directly with Product, Growth, and Operations on high-impact features.
- You will make pragmatic decisions between speed and sustainability, making your reasoning transparent to everyone.
Your Profile
- At least 10 years of experience with production web systems, several of those at Staff or Principal level.
- Expert knowledge in TypeScript, React, and Next.js, as well as solid understanding of Node.js and PostgreSQL.
- Experience with payments, headless commerce, or high-traffic e-commerce.
- Fluent English.
What We Offer
- A top-tier market salary plus an annual performance bonus.
- Remote-friendly within the EU, with offices in Paris (Place Vendôme) and Berlin.
- A generous monthly perfume budget to explore the entire catalog.
- A personal learning budget of €2,500 per year for courses, conferences, and books.
- Your choice of equipment and a home office budget.
- 30 days of paid vacation per year, in addition to public holidays.
- Real responsibility and fast decision-making in a rapidly growing European company.
Salary and Application
Salary: €140,000 to €185,000 gross per year, full-time, permanent, plus an annual performance bonus.
Location: Berlin or Paris, or alternatively remote from anywhere in the EU.
