Job description
In Brief
- Every day, millions of travelers use digital channels such as the Schiphol App and Schiphol.nl. The Commercial Technology department is responsible for optimizing both visible value for the traveler and strategic business impact from these channels. And this in a complex, dynamic environment that never stands still. We also facilitate our Cargo community with digital solutions.
- Our Cargo platform's main task is to support freight handling in a digital and seamless manner. This department is known for thinking from the customer's perspective. We start with the (customer) question, prioritize based on value, test quickly, and continuously improve. Decisions are made based on customer and business impact, not hierarchy.
- We are committed: Schiphol must become one of the top-3 European airports.
About the role
As a Solution Architect, you are responsible for developing and documenting solution architectures for projects and digital solutions. You are comfortable operating between business, architecture, and software development. You map business objectives, functional requirements, and non-functional requirements and translate them into a solution architecture that is secure, feasible, and future-proof. And how you approach this? That's up to you. We trust your ability to connect with others. You will use your talents to:
- analyze business needs and translate them into functional requirements, non-functional requirements, and suitable architectural solutions.
- design solutions for securely exposing data and functionality to customers, partners, and other applications.
- determine which integration method best suits an information flow, such as REST APIs, webhooks, messaging, Kafka, or other integration patterns.
- elaborate on how requirements for security, availability, performance, scalability, privacy, manageability, and monitoring are realized.
- Prepare ADDs, high-level designs, context diagrams, component diagrams, and system sequence diagrams that visualize information flows and system interactions.
- collaborate with software developers, lead developers, and platform teams to technically investigate and validate solution directions.
- coordinate with business stakeholders, product owners, security specialists, and other solution and enterprise architects.
- ensure that solutions align with Schiphol's architectural vision, security guidelines, cloud strategy, and technical standards.
- justify architectural choices, for example with Architecture Decision Records.
- guide solutions from the initial business question through to the technical elaboration and realization by the development team.
You look not only at the desired end state but also at the technical feasibility, existing systems, and the steps needed to actually realize a solution. Therefore, you are not an architect who exclusively sets boundaries from a distance. You actively collaborate with software developers, lead developers, platform teams, security specialists, and business representatives to investigate, validate, and further concretize solution directions. You are comfortable in technical discussions about, for example, Java applications, container platforms, REST APIs, webhooks, events, and messaging. You clearly document architectural choices in Architecture Definition Documents, Architecture viewpoints in the architecture repository, Architecture Decision Records, and other architectural products. This way, you provide development teams with clear frameworks with which they can further design and realize solutions.
What you bring
Schiphol connects your world. With the best people, we make travel safe and responsible. You contribute to this with your unique talents, such as your focused, goal-oriented approach to achieve results and your ability to build strong relationships with others. In any case, for this role, you have:
- a minimum of 5 years of work experience as a Solution Architect, Software Architect, or in a similar role within a complex IT landscape.
- demonstrated experience in designing solutions for software development teams.
- experience with modern software architecture, integration patterns, and distributed systems.
- experience with API architecture, REST APIs, webhooks, and messaging technologies.
- experience in gathering and translating non-functional requirements into concrete architectural choices.
- experience in creating high-level designs and diagrams that clarify system interactions and responsibilities.
- experience in documenting and justifying architectural decisions, for example, with Architecture Decision Records.
- the ability to clearly explain the pros and cons of a solution to both business and technical stakeholders.
- excellent command of Dutch and English, both spoken and written.
What you get
- € 5703 to € 7912 gross per month (scale 13).
- A 13th month's salary.
- Bring-Your-Own-Device (BYOD) scheme where you can spend 450 euros to set up your own (home) workspace.
- An NS-Business Card that fully reimburses travel by public transport to and from work.
- Room for professional and personal development. For example, there is a personal sustainable employability budget, for among other things pension contributions, financial advice, paid leave, training, (career) coaching, and vitality.
These are just a few of our benefits that come with this position (based on a 36-hour work week). Schiphol has even more to offer you. For a complete overview of all benefits, visit Employee Benefits - Working at Schiphol.
