Mō te tūnga | About the role

The Social Worker in Schools (SWiS) role focuses on strengthening the wellbeing, safety, and educational success of children by working closely with them, their whānau, and the wider school community. The position centres on building trusting relationships, understanding the unique strengths and challenges of each family, and developing practical plans that support positive change. The role works in partnership with school staff and community networks to create a safe, supportive environment where tamariki can thrive. As an active member of both the school and agency team, the SWiS social worker contributes to a community where children and families feel valued, heard, and supported in achieving better outcomes.

You have a deep commitment to child wellbeing, and you are skilled at assessing needs, developing practical plans, and working alongside others to create positive and sustainable change. You bring a calm, strengths-based approach to your practice and feel genuinely comfortable engaging with families from diverse cultural backgrounds. You will bring strong relationship‑building skills, a commitment to tikanga‑based and strengths‑focused practice, and an ability to engage confidently with whanau. You are organised, reflective, and confident in maintaining clear boundaries, accurate documentation, and ethical practice. Most importantly, you believe in the potential of every child and are motivated by helping tamariki feel safe, supported, and able to succeed at school.

Qualifications

• Social Work Qualification
• Registered with SWRB

Skills

• Excellent written and oral communication
• Full, clean driver’s license
• Strong computer skills
