Senior Technician - AMR Microbiology

Te tūnga | The role We have an exciting opportunity for a 12-month fixed term (starting in September) full time Senior Technician role to join our Microbiology AMR team within the Health Security Group, based at Kenepuru Science Centre, Porirua. This role will perform routine and non-routine laboratory analysis of clinical samples, undertake testing using microbiological and molecular techniques, perform calculations, and interpret results relevant to antimicrobial resistance surveillance and research. The successful candidate will be expected to work independently and as part of a team, with minimal supervision, to achieve high-quality results in a timely manner. Key responsibilities include: • Performing routine and non-routine laboratory analysis of clinical samples using microbiological and molecular techniques. • Undertaking testing and interpreting results relevant to antimicrobial resistance surveillance and research. • Maintaining accurate records of all tests performed, including results and any issues encountered during the testing process. • Collaborating with other team members to achieve high-quality results in a timely manner. • Participating in quality control and assurance activities to ensure compliance with laboratory standards and protocols. • Staying up-to-date with new techniques and technologies relevant to microbiology and antimicrobial resistance surveillance. • Providing technical support and guidance to junior staff as required. The ideal candidate will have: • A Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (e.g., Microbiology, Biochemistry, Biological Sciences). • At least 2 years of experience working in a laboratory environment, preferably with experience in microbiology or molecular biology. • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. • Ability to work independently and as part of a team. • Familiarity with laboratory information management systems (LIMS) and electronic laboratory notebooks (ELNs). • Willingness to learn new techniques and technologies relevant to microbiology and antimicrobial resistance surveillance.
