Senior Software Engineer
Job description
We Go Beyond for A Safer World
Te Tūranga - The Role
We are seeking an experienced Senior Software Engineer to contribute to the development of a service enablement platform that integrates multiple systems to improve business and customer workflows. This role is hands-on and primarily involves backend microservice design, development, and integration.
You'll be working as part of a small, collaborative, cross-functional team based in New Zealand, alongside overseas contractors. While your main focus will be backend system design and implementation, there will also be opportunities to assist with deployment, workflow design, frontend development, and process optimisation - depending on your interests.
This is more than just a coding role: you'll be expected to take ownership of solutions by understanding requirements, working with stakeholders to deliver business outcomes, and providing technical leadership to ensure quality, robustness, and maintainability. You'll thrive in an environment with high levels of ambiguity, helping the team keep moving forward in a positive, productive way while continually improving our products and processes.
In this role, you will:
- Contribute to the design, implementation, and delivery of backend microservices.
- Own solutions end-to-end: from understanding requirements through to deployment and support.
- Collaborate closely with team members, contractors, and stakeholders to deliver meaningful business outcomes.
- Conduct thorough evaluations of proposed design solutions and champion a focus on quality.
- Identify, debug, and resolve technical issues across the system.
- Mentor and support engineers, sharing best practices and helping the team build new skills.
- Demonstrate leadership by bringing innovation, clarity, and technical depth to complex problems.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of our products, processes, and development practices.
Ō pūkenga - About You
To succeed in this role, you will bring:
- A relevant tertiary qualification and/or significant experience in software engineering.
- Proven experience with backend application development (microservices, APIs, data integration).
- Strong understanding of software design principles, system integration, and engineering best practices.
- A track record of working in collaborative teams, building trust, and achieving results together.
- The ability to handle ambiguity and change, keeping the team focused and moving forward.
- A passion for quality and an eye for detail in design, code, and delivery.
- The confidence to provide technical leadership while also being a hands-on contributor.
- A mindset of continuous learning and improvement, for both yourself and your team.
