We design, develop, and manufacture high-tech sensors for autonomous driving, intelligent infrastructure, and Smart Cities. Our mission is to make roads safer, enable autonomous driving at any weather, optimize traffic flow to reduce travel times, and create environmentally friendly and intelligent cities.

We are a German company with international presence and own teams in the UK and USA, while our headquarters for design, development, and production is located in Braunschweig.

We make mobility of the future a reality.

We are looking for a visionary and experienced software architect who will lead the technical conception and strategy for our entire software portfolio.

Your Tasks

  • Software Architecture: Definition and maintenance of an overarching architecture roadmap for smartmicro's software products to ensure alignment with business goals and long-term technical vision.
  • System Design: Leadership of high-level designs for our software systems, including embedded firmware on bare metal and Linux-based platforms, the COM-HUB-Edge device, and cloud interfaces.
  • Technical Leadership: Function as the first point of contact for architectural questions and challenges.
  • Standardization and Best Practices: Establishment and enforcement of technical standards, design patterns, and best practices throughout the company – including definition and control of central architecture concepts such as communication datagrams and interface descriptions.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Close collaboration with Product Owners, software developers, and group leaders to implement requirements in robust and scalable technical solutions.
  • Prototyping & Evaluation: Evaluation, prototyping, and recommendation of new technologies, tools, and frameworks to keep our products up-to-date with the latest technology.
  • Direct reporting to the Head of the Embedded Department.

Your Strengths

  • Masters degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Relevant experience in software development, with a significant portion in a leading technical function as software architect, lead engineer, or similar position.
  • In-depth practical experience in C or C++ development for complex systems and hardware-oriented software; Python knowledge may be required for automation and scripting tasks.
  • Fundamental expertise in the development of software for embedded systems, including bare metal and embedded Linux environments (e.g., Yocto, Buildroot).
  • Fundamental knowledge in the areas of computer architecture, real-time operating systems, memory management, and hardware abstraction layers.
  • Expertise in conceiving and implementing interprocess communication (IPC) and distributed systems.
  • Knowledge about specific RTOS environments like FreeRTOS, VxWorks, ThreadX, PikeOS, or QNX.
  • Experience with ARM-based platforms, NXP and TI microcontrollers, and various communication protocols (e.g., TCP/IP, UDP, MQTT, CAN, REST APIs, Ethernet, I2C, and SPI).
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to convey complex technical ideas both to a technical and non-technical audience.
  • Outstanding leadership and mentoring abilities.
  • Good German language skills would be an advantage.

What You Can Expect

  • Innovation: latest technology, innovation, and fast development cycles, excellent working and testing equipment.
  • A pleasant work environment: informal culture, motivated teams, short communication paths, space for active co-creation.
  • Futuristic workplace: modern buildings, offices, and labs, unlimited employment contracts, and individual opportunities for further education.
