Job description
Shopware is a leading e-commerce system that enables companies worldwide to scale quickly and efficiently in digital commerce. As a future-oriented open-source solution, Shopware is already used by some of the largest European brands, retailers, and manufacturers in the B2C and B2B sectors.
As a Senior Quality Engineer – Checkout & Payments, you will contribute to ensuring reliable payment processes across Shopware, Shopware Payments, and external systems. Your focus will be on practical integration tests, test automation, and release validation: you will check whether customers can successfully complete a purchase, order and payment statuses are correct, and errors and retries are handled reliably.
You will be part of the Quality Operations department within Delivery Excellence and work closely with the Checkout & Payments teams, product management, and other Quality Engineers. You will introduce quality early in feature planning, translate product risks into executable tests, investigate errors, and provide clear recommendations for release readiness. This position is a senior engineering role without management responsibility. You will further develop the existing framework for acceptance tests and the CI infrastructure, rather than building a separate testing organization.
Define and implement risk-based test coverage. Collaborate with Product and Engineering to identify critical processes for merchants and customers, existing test coverage, and gaps. Agree on a clearly defined test scope for each development package and accompany it through implementation, review, and validation.
Develop and maintain automated tests. Utilize TypeScript, Playwright, as well as API and integration tests to verify behavior in the storefront, Shopware, the Payments service, and at the interfaces with payment providers. Choose the appropriate test level rather than mapping every check in a browser test.
Verify payment results, not just UI behavior. Check order creation, payment status, amounts, and currencies. Supplement test coverage with relevant scenarios for cancellation, collection, refunds, webhooks, and recovery, according to product risk.
Evaluate integration errors together with developers. If necessary, check authentication, tenant separation, repeated requests, idempotency, and asynchronous status changes. Ensure that errors do not cause duplicate payments or inconsistent orders.
Make test results usable for delivery. Integrate and maintain product tests together with Engineering and Product Operations in the CI. Improve test data, repeatability, and diagnostic capabilities. Differentiate between product errors, issues with payment providers or environments, and unstable tests.
Validate releases and compatibility. Check relevant release artifacts, upgrades, and supported configurations within the existing release process. Translate insights from incidents into regression tests and concrete improvements.
Communicate a clear QA recommendation. Explain the tested scope, results, remaining risks, blockers, and next steps to Product and Engineering. Proactively address priority conflicts and accompany open points until their resolution, an agreed handover, or a clear decision.
Share responsibility and knowledge. Review test code, collaborate with colleagues through pairing, and jointly improve reusable fixtures and documentation. Coordinate with other Quality Engineers to ensure test coverage can be maintained and supported by multiple individuals.
What you bring:
Experience in developing and maintaining automated tests for production software, including API and integration tests as well as end-to-end tests.
Very good programming skills in TypeScript or JavaScript and practical experience with Playwright or a comparable framework. You can confidently work within a Playwright-based codebase.
Experience with CI pipelines, Git, code reviews, reproducible test environments, and troubleshooting using logs, traces, and application code.
Understanding of HTTP APIs, authentication, asynchronous processing, and state transitions – including how to test error and retry behavior.
The ability to translate unclear product requirements into testable scenarios, prioritize by risk, and implement meaningful work steps – seeking support when needed.
A collaborative attitude: You enjoy working in a team, are curious to learn from others, and are happy to share your knowledge and experience.
Clear oral and written communication in English, as well as experience in direct collaboration with developers and product colleagues on quality risks and release decisions.
Advantageous:
Experience with payment providers, e-commerce, or financial transactions is helpful. Knowledge in PHP/Symfony, Shopware, OpenAPI-based API contract testing, containerized environments, or multi-tenant services is also welcome. Experience with AI-powered development and testing tools is also welcome, provided the results are independently checked and verified.
We value diverse career paths and perspectives. You don't need to have experience in every area mentioned to apply. Knowledge of Shopware or PayPal is not a prerequisite.
How success is measured:
You will define your initial priorities during onboarding together with Product, Engineering, and the Quality Engineering team. This includes:
An up-to-date overview of critical Payments processes, existing test coverage, and the most important gaps – with clearly assigned implementation responsibilities.
An initial purchase and payment process that runs reliably in CI or within an agreed release gate, which checks the order and payment result and provides meaningful error messages.
Risk-based test coverage for further integrations and expansions of the New Checkout – with clear QA recommendations, documented limitations, and shared responsibility for maintaining the tests.
Progress will be evaluated based on actual functional test coverage, test reliability, and the meaningfulness of release decisions – not solely on the number of tests or the extent of documentation.
What we offer you:
Company Culture: Open culture, flat hierarchies, initiative is encouraged.
Employment Contracts: Permanent positions offer long-term security.
Flexibility: Flexible working hours and options for mobile working and full-remote contracts.
Equipment: Free choice of work hardware.
Onboarding: Well-structured onboarding with support from a personal "Buddy".
Work Environment: Inspiring environment with dedicated colleagues and a dynamic community.
Development Opportunities: Diverse opportunities for personal growth and development.
Additional Benefits: Attractive benefits such as company pension schemes, health programs, and regular team events.
... and much more!
