Job description
Are you a Senior Mechanical Engineer who wants to make an impact in one of the most critical technical environments? Within our Airports unit, you will work on high-quality projects that directly contribute to safe, reliable, and sustainable airport infrastructure. You will combine technical depth with a holistic view and take a key role in complex projects.
The Challenge
In this role, you will be the technical mechanical engineering linchpin within complex airport projects, both nationally and internationally. You will operate at the heart of airport operations, where safety, continuity, and quality are paramount. You will take the lead in developing smart, integrated installation engineering solutions and advise clients at a strategic and conceptual level.
Working in a 24-hour airport environment makes this role particularly dynamic and challenging. The complexity of both the client and the situation demands flexibility, quick thinking, and creative problem-solving. It is precisely this variety that ensures no two days are the same.
Together with multidisciplinary project teams, you will steer design and realization, with a direct impact on daily operations and the future-proofing of airports. With your expertise and leadership, you will elevate not only projects but also colleagues to a higher level.
Your responsibilities include:
You will independently design and advise on complex mechanical engineering installations within airport projects and translate designs from sketch to technical elaboration in AutoCAD and BIM. You will set up BIM structures and supervise and correct junior colleagues.
Contributing technically to concept development and translating design principles into feasible and integrated solutions.
Executing and reviewing calculations and assessing the work of engineers and technicians.
Coordinating technical choices and requirements with project leaders, designers, other disciplines, and external parties.
Identifying risks and deviations in quality, planning, and budget, and proactively communicating these within the project team.
Supervising, coaching, and providing technical support to junior engineers within projects.
Providing input for reports, advice, and proposals.
Actively contributing to knowledge sharing and quality improvement within the Airports department.
The projects you can be proud of
We are working on the sustainability of Schiphol's Terminal 1 & 2, covering approximately 40% of the entire terminal: The current installations that ensure a pleasant indoor climate use fossil fuels. We are working on the design of the new installation, which combines heat and cold storage with heat pumps so that Schiphol can embrace the future in an energy-neutral way. The challenge of this project lies mainly in applying new technology in an existing building where space must be created to properly house all equipment and piping, and to ensure that every space is provided with sufficient heating and cooling. This should ensure a pleasant passenger experience, but also offer a pleasant working climate for employees at Schiphol, taking into account their daily activities.
We are working on the new operational building for DC ANSP, the air traffic control for Dutch airspace in the Caribbean. This is a facility for air traffic controllers responsible for area control, where the operations room and the equipment room must meet strict building physics and climate requirements with a high degree of redundancy. The environment also demands a robust design that can withstand hurricanes and earthquakes.
At Schiphol, we are working on various large and small projects where climate control plays a major role due to the intensive use of various spaces and the increase in equipment. Schiphol is a unique client to work for, due to the size of the airport, the continuous operational requirements, and the presence of different security zones. We are often called upon to identify the cause of complaints and provide the right solution, or to find the right solution for new equipment that places higher demands on the installations. Almost always, these are locations where passengers are present and Schiphol wants to offer them a comfortable environment, or where employees perform tasks that are essential for the primary process of the airport, for which a pleasant climate is an important prerequisite.
Team
You will work in a team of colleagues within an organization with over 750 employees, active in various sectors. The close-knit airports team consists of project managers, consultants, mechanical and electrical engineers, and specialists in airport systems. There is extensive knowledge of airport operations, building-related installations, and specific airport systems. The culture is open and focused on knowledge sharing and job satisfaction. You will be part of an integrated project team where everyone's expertise is optimally utilized, ensuring strong collaboration and personal growth. The Airports unit works for airports domestically and internationally, allowing you to work on diverse projects and ensuring no two days are the same.
This is you
MBO, HBO, or WO work and thinking level, with a completed education in Mechanical Engineering, Installation Engineering, or a comparable technical field. Candidates with an MBO background and extensive relevant work experience in design are also explicitly invited to apply.
Several years of experience within the built environment, preferably in a design or engineering role.
Solid technical foundation and insight into the design and execution process.
Experience with, for example, airport, shopping mall, large office, or hospital projects is a plus.
Good communication skills, both written and oral.
Structured and meticulous way of working, with an eye for quality and planning.
Collaborative and capable of working independently and as part of a team.
Proficient in or willing to develop in common tools and systems (MS 365, AutoCad, Revit, design and calculation software).
Excellent command of the Dutch language and good command of English.
What we offer
A position of 32-40 hours per week with a corresponding salary.
Challenging projects for leading clients in the Netherlands and internationally.
A work environment where innovation and sustainability are put into practice daily.
Attention to your personal development and vitality with ample training and development opportunities, bicycle and sports facilities, flexible working hours, 33 vacation days, and the possibility to purchase additional days.
Hybrid working, with the option to work alternately from home and at the office in The Hague.
A team where collaboration and collegiality are paramount and where we interact informally.
Sustainability is in our DNA. This is reflected, for example, in a mobility policy that prioritizes health and sustainability. Many of our offices are located near public transport hubs, cycling is encouraged, and your travel costs are 100% reimbursed based on public transport.
