Job description

Are you a Senior Mechanical Engineer who wants to make an impact in challenging Life Sciences projects? Design advanced, sustainable mechanical installations for high-tech laboratories or classified production facilities, where your expertise truly makes a difference. At Deerns, you will have the space to lead complex projects and help build the future of science and healthcare-tech laboratories.

The Challenge

As a Senior Mechanical Engineer within Life Sciences, you play a key role in the design of complex and technically challenging production facilities, laboratories, cleanrooms, and high-tech research environments. You translate client wishes into reliable, energy-efficient, and future-proof mechanical installations, from HVAC systems and air treatment to process cooling, steam, water, and gas systems.

In the role of Senior Engineer, you also take full design responsibility and act as the point of contact for both the client and the design team. From the conceptual phase, you contribute to technical solutions that meet the strictest standards within Life Sciences, such as GMP guidelines, biosafety requirements, and high sustainability standards. You work closely with other disciplines in multidisciplinary project teams and monitor the quality and coherence of the overall design.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Contributing to the early design and conceptual phase of projects, such as laboratories, cleanrooms, and production facilities.

  • Developing mechanical installations in the areas of HVAC, air treatment, climate control systems, process cooling, heat pumps, steam, water, and gas systems for laboratories.

  • Creating technical calculations, such as airflow, cooling and heating load, pipe sizing, and pressure drop calculations using specialized software.

  • Aligning and coordinating design work with the design lead and other disciplines within the project team.

  • Supporting the design lead and project manager in communication with clients, suppliers, and partners.

What we are working on

  • Various university buildings, working on innovative and inspiring research environments. Labs and buildings support the researcher. At the same time, making designs future-proof by integrating sustainability ambitions and legislation and regulations.

  • Various independent commercial organizations that require classified spaces for their production/research processes. These often involve GMP or ISO classifications, where you combine the best design with sustainability, Building Physics, Smart Building Solutions, fire, and safety requirements. Within Deerns, many disciplines are present with whom we collaborate integrally to achieve optimal results for our designs.

The Team

You will be part of a team of approximately 16 colleagues, within a broader organization where you will have over 750 colleagues in different sectors. The Life Sciences team is a close-knit team consisting of project managers, consultants, mechanical, and electrical engineers. The team possesses extensive knowledge of operations and processes within Life Sciences, building-related installations, and specifically, specialized room classifications. An open culture prevails, where knowledge sharing and enjoyment of work are highly valued. Moreover, you will work in a close-knit, integral project team where everyone's knowledge and expertise are optimally utilized. This not only ensures strong collaboration but also personal growth. Life Sciences primarily works for Universities, Pharma, Research, Med-Tech, and Nutraceuticals companies, both in the Netherlands and internationally. This ensures that you work on diverse projects and no day is the same. Additionally, you regularly collaborate with our units in Spain, England, and Italy, making you part of a strong international network.

This is you

  • You have at least a completed bachelor's degree (HBO/WO) in Mechanical Engineering, Installation Technology, or a comparable technical education.

  • You have already gained the necessary experience as a Mechanical Engineer and are ready for the next step in your career towards complex Life Sciences projects.

  • You have experience working in multidisciplinary projects and as a team player, you collaborate smoothly with other disciplines, such as electrical engineering, architecture, and process engineering.

  • You master the Dutch and English languages excellently, both spoken and written.

  • You are proficient in MS Office, Revit, BIM360, and relevant calculation and simulation software (e.g., Vabi, CFDtools, or pipe network calculations); these programs hold no secrets for you.

What we offer

  • A position of 32-40 hours per week with a corresponding salary.

  • Challenging projects for leading clients in the Netherlands and internationally.

  • A work environment where innovation and sustainability are practiced daily.

  • Attention to your personal development and vitality with ample training and development opportunities, bicycle and sports facilities, flexible working hours, 33 vacation days, and the possibility to purchase additional days.

  • Hybrid working, with the option to work alternately from home and at the office in The Hague.

  • A team where collaboration and collegiality are paramount, and where we interact informally.

  • Sustainability is in our DNA. This is reflected, for example, in a mobility policy where health and sustainability are prioritized. Many of our offices are located near public transport hubs, cycling is encouraged, and your travel costs are reimbursed 100% based on public transport.
