Senior Machine Learning Engineer

As a Senior Machine Learning Engineer at BigData Republic, you combine in-depth technical expertise with consultancy. You not only develop machine learning solutions but also bring them into production and advise clients on architecture, technology, and the best approach to achieve sustainable business value.

For this senior position, we are looking for an experienced professional with at least 6 years of relevant work experience, including at least 3 years of hands-on experience with machine learning in professional production environments.

What will you do?

Machine Learning Engineering at BigData Republic sits at the intersection of Machine Learning, MLOps, Software Engineering, Data Engineering, and Cloud Engineering.

You will work in multidisciplinary teams at clients on end-to-end machine learning solutions: from problem definition and architecture to development, deployment, monitoring, and optimization.

You;

• analyze complex business and technical challenges and translate them into robust ML solutions;

• advise clients and stakeholders on machine learning, MLOps, architecture, and technical choices;

• develop and productionize machine learning models;

• design scalable ML and MLOps architectures;

• build production-grade software around machine learning solutions;

• work on deployment, CI/CD, model serving, monitoring, and observability;

• collaborate with Data Scientists, Data Engineers, Software Engineers, and Cloud Engineers;

• help clients and colleagues grow in expertise;

• actively contribute to knowledge sharing and thought leadership within BigData Republic.

The technical challenges range from machine learning models with direct business impact to applications involving deep learning, generative AI, Large Language Models (LLMs), predictive modeling, causal inference, and reinforcement learning.

At BigData Republic, we do not see a machine learning model as the final product. A model only delivers value when it runs reliably, scalably, and manageably in production. Therefore, we approach ML solutions as full-fledged software products.

The technology you use depends on the specific problem. Therefore, we are not looking for an engineer who simply knows as many tools as possible, but an experienced professional who understands which technical solution is appropriate in which situation and why.

You will work on complex data, AI, and machine learning challenges for large organizations across various sectors. At the same time, you will be part of a small, informal, and technically driven team of experienced Machine Learning Engineers, MLOps Engineers, Data Engineers, and Data Scientists.

Knowledge sharing and thought leadership are fundamental components of BigData Republic. Every Friday, we organize knowledge sessions at the office, we write insightful articles, host meetups, and attend and speak at conferences. You will have a lot of freedom to further develop your own expertise while simultaneously helping colleagues and clients grow.

This is explicitly a senior consultancy role. To be successful in this position, we are looking for someone who possesses:

• at least 6 years of relevant professional experience in software engineering, data engineering, data science, and/or machine learning;

• at least 3 years of hands-on professional experience with machine learning, where you have demonstrably brought ML solutions into production and managed, improved, or scaled them;

• experience in independently analyzing complex technical challenges and advising clients and stakeholders on solutions, architecture, and technical choices;

• extensive professional programming experience with Python;

• solid knowledge of software engineering principles and experience building production-grade solutions;

• experience with at least one major cloud environment: AWS, Azure, and/or GCP;

• experience with MLOps, including deployment, CI/CD, monitoring, observability, and scalability;

• academic work and thinking level, preferably with a background in Data Science, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field;

• excellent command of Dutch (at least C1) and English, both spoken and written.
  
  

Additionally, it is an advantage if you have experience with:

• consultancy within complex enterprise environments;

• solution architecture or technical leadership;

• Kubernetes and Terraform;

• Spark, Kafka, and/or Airflow;

• TensorFlow and/or PyTorch;

• generative AI and Large Language Models (LLMs);

• deep learning, causal inference, or reinforcement learning;

• Scala, Kotlin, and/or SQL;

• open-source projects, meetups, conferences, or other forms of knowledge sharing.
  

We do not expect you to have worked with every technology in our stack. The seniority of your experience, the actual implementation of machine learning solutions in production, your ability to provide technical advice to clients, and your command of the Dutch language are essential for this role.

You are technically strong but look beyond just the technology. You can understand complex situations, weigh alternatives, and explain why a particular solution is or is not wise. You feel comfortable in discussions with engineers, architects, and business stakeholders.

At the same time, you enjoy building yourself. BigData Republic is not looking for a consultant who only advises from the sidelines: you combine senior technical advice with hands-on Machine Learning Engineering.
