About the Role Our client, a rapidly expanding global Insurtech insurance company, is seeking an experienced Senior Legal Counsel, Africa to take a leading role in commercial agreements, regulatory compliance, and legal risk management across the African region, with a primary focus on South Africa and Kenya. This is a fully remote position offering the opportunity to work with multicultural teams across EMEA. Key Responsibilities Identify, interpret, and apply African insurance laws, regulations, and industry standards to ensure compliance with company policies and procedures. Develop and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including business leaders, regulatory bodies, and external partners. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop and implement effective legal strategies that align with the company's overall goals and objectives. Provide expert advice on commercial agreements, contracts, and other legal matters to ensure the company's interests are protected. Identify and mitigate legal risks associated with new business initiatives, partnerships, and investments. Develop and maintain a deep understanding of African insurance markets, regulatory environments, and industry trends to inform strategic decision-making. Stay up-to-date with changes in laws, regulations, and industry standards to ensure compliance and minimize legal risk. Provide training and guidance to junior lawyers and other stakeholders on African insurance law and regulatory requirements. Contribute to the development of company-wide policies, procedures, and guidelines related to African insurance markets. Work closely with the General Counsel and other senior leaders to develop and implement a comprehensive legal strategy for Africa. This role requires a strong understanding of African insurance laws, regulations, and industry standards, as well as excellent communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills. The ideal candidate will have a law degree from a recognized institution in South Africa or another African country, with at least 5 years of experience working in the insurance industry or as an in-house counsel for an Insurtech company. Fluency in English is required, with proficiency in one or more African languages being an asset.
