Job description

Senior Fullstack Developer (m/f/d) – PHP/Symfony & React – Berlin

The plan is set, now we need you: Bring our software from legacy PHP to Symfony and React.

At a Glance

  • Stack: PHP 8.1 (Legacy) → Symfony · jQuery/Vanilla-JS → React · MySQL/MariaDB, SingleStore · Git, CI/CD

  • Salary: €52,000–€62,000 gross/year, more for exceptional profiles · permanent, full-time

  • Work Model: hybrid, 3 days office / 2 days remote

  • Location: Berlin-Zehlendorf, directly at Zehlendorf S-Bahn station (S1)

  • Product: Konsentas, an appointment and case management system for authorities

  • Start: as soon as possible or by arrangement

The Role

Our core product Konsentas has grown over many years, and the code shows it. The backend runs on PHP 8.1 without a framework. In the frontend, jQuery and Vanilla-JS sit alongside React, and there are currently few automated tests.

The direction is clear: The backend will be gradually migrated to Symfony, and the frontend will be standardized on React. The migration is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2027. What's missing is not a plan, but capacity.

You will make independent technical decisions, contribute to architectural and modernization issues, and ensure that code quality improves with each release. The product will remain in use: maintenance, support, and new features will run in parallel with modernization.

Your Tasks

  • Gradually replace legacy modules with Symfony services and React interfaces while the system is in operation

  • Develop fullstack features from the database to the frontend, sometimes as customer-specific extensions

  • Maintain, debug, and further develop existing legacy code

  • Conduct code reviews and expand test coverage

  • Coordinate with development management and managing directors on which areas will be modernized next

  • Provide technical support to our two apprentices in their final training phase (without disciplinary leadership)

  • Occasionally participate in customer appointments, approximately every 3–4 weeks

After 6 Months…

… you will implement features independently, have demonstrably contributed to modernization, improved code quality, and become a reliable point of contact for our apprentices.

Your Profile

  • Experience: approximately 4–5 years in professional software development (a guideline, not a strict limit)

  • PHP: sound knowledge of modern PHP 8.x with object-oriented architecture, such as Dependency Injection, Interfaces, and SOLID

  • Symfony: demonstrable practical experience with the framework

  • Legacy Code: You are confident handling grown codebases. You refactor, debug, and develop further without rewriting everything.

  • JavaScript/React: solid frontend experience, jQuery does not scare you

  • Databases: relational databases like MySQL/MariaDB or SingleStore and confident handling of SQL

  • Tooling: Git and working with CI/CD

  • Language: German at C1 level, English at least B1

  • Work Style: independent, structured, proactive, and with a high demand for quality

  • Personal Qualities: You communicate reliably, enjoy working in a team, take responsibility, are not afraid of difficult code sections, and are happy to share your knowledge.

  • Education: Apprenticeship or technical college degree count just as much as a university degree for us. Practical experience is what matters.

Bonus Points: REST/API design and interface development, automated testing (PHPUnit, Jest), Docker, deployment pipelines and cloud, software architecture and design

-

patterns, productive use of AI tools like Claude Code or Codex. Experience with software for the public sector is not necessary.

Your Team

A small team with short distances: Daniel (Developer Lead), Nico (Managing Director & Project Manager), who actively develops himself, an external developer, and two apprentices. You coordinate daily. Daniel and Nico will personally handle your onboarding.

What We Offer

  • A meaningful product used daily in citizens' offices, in a crisis-proof market

  • Real influence on technical decisions and modernization with a clear goal

  • 30 vacation days

  • Flexible working hours with core hours starting at 10 AM, 2 remote days per week

  • Professional development during working hours, e.g., Udemy courses; your own suggestions are welcome

  • Claude license, open to other tools

  • Hardware: Lenovo ThinkPad, open to suggestions

  • UrbanSportsClub and JobRad

  • Good transport links: S1 and buses M48, 101, 115

The Application Process

  1. Introductory meeting with Sara

  2. Technical interview with live project work with Nico and Daniel

  3. On-site team meeting

  4. Offer
