Senior Embedded Software Engineer (m/w/d)

The KION Battery Systems GmbH is a joint venture of the KION GROUP AG and the BMZ Battery Solution GmbH. At our location in Karlstein am Main, we have been producing high-performance lithium-ion battery systems (24 V, 48 V, 80 V) for electric forklifts and warehouse technology equipment from STILL and Linde Material Handling since 2020. We combine the stability of two industry leaders with the design freedom of a young company.

Owing to our growth, we are looking for a Senior Embedded Software Engineer – BMS (m/w/d) in full-time at the earliest possible time.

Aufgaben

As a Senior Embedded Software Engineer, you will design and develop the BMS software that makes our battery systems intelligent and secure from concept to series maturity. You will work on products that drive thousands of electric forklifts worldwide every day.

• You have great design freedom and influence technical direction decisions actively and bring your own ideas into product development
• You take over the technical leadership+ for a team of 5 developers with perspective on disciplinary leadership responsibility
• You are responsible for architecture and implementation of embedded software in C/C++ – from drivers (CAN, SPI, I2C) to interface design
• You integrate software into the control unit environment, work with real-time operating systems (ThreadX, PXROS), and set KI-supported development tools (Codex, Claude) deliberately
• You perform debugging, profiling, and performance optimization on embedded targets – including Lauterbach/Trace32
• You ensure quality through unit/integration tests (Unity), HIL tests (Vector Tools), and root cause analysis in the interdisciplinary team

Qualifikation

This is what you bring:

• A successful degree in computer science, electrical engineering, software engineering or comparable
• At least 5 years of professional experience in embedded software development, ideally in the automotive, industry, or BMS environment
• In-depth expertise in embedded C/C++, microcontrollers, and real-time software
• Experience with software architecture and independent design concept development
• Knowledge of functional safe software according to ISO 13849, IEC 61508 or ISO 26262
• Experience in technical mentoring and guiding developers
• Good German and English language skills in writing and speaking

Nice-to-haves:

• Cybersecurity in Embedded Systems (ISO/SAE 21434) and/or Requirements Engineering (Polarion, ReqIF)
• Python and KI-supported development for code generation, automation, and review
• Experience with Vector CANoe, static code analysis (Polyspace, SonarQube, Axivion), CI/CD pipelines or laboratory/messtechnik
