Job description

Are you an experienced database specialist who wants to use your technical expertise for complex issues and the further development of a modern data platform? Do you want to contribute to secure, reliable, and future-proof database services within a societal organization, but are you consciously looking for a position for 16 hours per week? Then we are looking for you.

Where you make a difference

As a Senior Database Specialist, you will strengthen our team with specialized knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server and PostgreSQL. You will focus mainly on complex technical issues, improvements, and innovation. The daily operations are handled by the team; you will help where extra expertise, depth, or direction is needed.

Our database services form an important part of the CBS's technical infrastructure. Availability, performance, security, and continuity are essential. At the same time, we are further developing our services by automating more, researching new database services, and further modernizing our infrastructure.

With your experience, you will help the team with issues that go beyond daily management. You will analyze complex problems, advise on technical choices, and help realize structural improvements. You will work with both our existing MSSQL and PostgreSQL environments and on the development of future database services.

Because you work 16 hours per week, the emphasis is on activities where your senior expertise adds the most value:

  • analyzing and solving complex issues related to MSSQL and PostgreSQL, including performance, troubleshooting, and database optimization;

  • advising on database architecture, high availability, disaster recovery, lifecycle management, and processing large amounts of data;

  • initiating and implementing structural technical improvements and contributing to upgrades, migrations, and automation of database tasks;

  • contributing to the development of new database services, including Database as a Service and future technologies such as graph databases;

  • contributing to the further modernization of the platform, including containerization, Docker, Kubernetes, Infrastructure as Code, and CI/CD;

  • improving monitoring, logging, capacity management, backup and restore facilities, encryption, authorizations, and information security, and sharing your knowledge with colleagues and other technical specialists.

Your future colleagues

You will be working in the Data & Web Services Team of the Generic Infrastructure (IGI) department. The department consists of approximately 30 IT professionals working from Heerlen and The Hague. The Data & Web Services Team consists of approximately 15 colleagues.

Within the team, we work Agile in combination with ITIL. We use Azure DevOps to visualize the work and work with stories and epics. We also participate in fixed moments such as daily stand-ups, planning, reviews, and retrospectives.

With 16 hours per week, you are a fully integrated part of the team, but we do not expect you to handle every operational task. In consultation, we will determine where your expertise can make the most difference. Therefore, you will work closely with the colleagues who are daily responsible for the database services and support them with more complex technical issues and developments.
We work with colleagues at different locations and from different specialisms. Knowledge sharing, collaboration, and enjoyment of work are important to us.

This is you

You are an experienced database specialist who quickly gets to the core of a technical issue. You do not need to be constantly involved in daily operations to understand what is going on and are able to set clear priorities within your available time.

You combine in-depth database knowledge with a broader view of infrastructure, automation, and security. You do not just think in temporary solutions, but look for structural improvements that add value in the longer term as well.

In addition, you can clearly explain your technical considerations. You easily collaborate with other technical disciplines, share your knowledge, and can advise colleagues without taking over their work.

Furthermore, you have:

  • HBO (higher professional education) work and thinking level and several years of relevant experience in designing, managing, and optimizing database environments;

  • demonstrable and in-depth experience with Microsoft SQL Server and PostgreSQL, including performance tuning, troubleshooting, backup/restore, and high availability;

  • experience with Windows and Linux server environments and automation with, for example, PowerShell, Bash, and/or Python;

  • knowledge of database security, including encryption, authorizations, information security, and compliance;

  • knowledge of Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD, and DevOps practices, and preferably experience with Infrastructure as Code, for example Ansible;

  • knowledge of ITIL processes, strong analytical and communication skills, and a proactive attitude focused on knowledge sharing and continuous improvement.

Certifications in Microsoft SQL Server and/or PostgreSQL are a plus.

Actually well arranged

For our employment conditions, we follow the CAO Rijk (Government Sector Collective Labour Agreement). This means that, among other things, you can count on the following:

  • A salary of at least € 4132 and a maximum of € 6275 gross per month based on 36 hours. Depending on your knowledge and experience. If you do not yet have all the necessary knowledge and experience at the start of your position, a temporary classification in a lower salary scale may be chosen. You will make agreements about this with your manager at the start of your position.

  • 8% holiday allowance and a 13th month. In total, this is 16.5% on top of your salary. We call this the Individual Choice Budget (IKB). You decide how, when, and in what way you want to use this budget.

  • Pension accrual with the ABP Pension Fund.

  • A laptop (Microsoft or Apple) and mobile phone (Android or iOS).

  • Two to three days of working from home, the rest of the time you will be present in our recently renovated building. You will make further arrangements about this within your team.

Come work on the facts

We will close the vacancy once we have enough suitable candidates.
