We have an amazing role available at Rocktopia. The position of Senior Coach and Head Route Setter. You will play a key role in delivering high-quality coaching programmes, developing junior coaches, and ensuring our climbing facility runs safely and smoothly. You will also be leading and working as part of a team to design and set high-quality, safe boulder, top rope and training room problems.

Key Tasks & Responsibilities:

  • Senior Coach:
  • You’ll work closely with the Head Coach to support the growth of competitive and recreational climbing at Rocktopia.
  • Monitor athlete progress and provide structured feedback and performance reviews
  • Ensure coaching practices follow current best practice in climbing performance and safety
  • Ensure all coaching activities meet health and safety standards and gym policies
  • Maintain strong risk management practices during training sessions
  • Uphold safeguarding and child protection responsibilities at all times
  • Maintain accurate records of attendance, progression, and training plans
  • Act as a role model for athletes, staff, and the wider climbing community

  • Head Setter:
  • Working within the Safety Management Plan to ensure the setting process is conducted safely, and that boulders are safe for the public.
  • Ensuring Rocktopia stays within the parameters of grades and styles as part of the Rocktopia setting framework.
  • Lead the planning and execution of setting for competitions, leagues, and special events
  • Develop and manage the weekly and monthly setting schedule
  • Using provided apps and tracking methods to record, collect and analyze setting data and statistics and report them to the Manager and Directors
  • Conduct risk assessments before and during setting activities
  • Train, and mentor route setters to meet facility standards
  • Aid with the ordering of new holds and volumes as required.
  • Organizing and cleaning climbing holds and equipment.
  • Assisting with cleaning and general maintenance of the facility where needed

Safety

  • Provide a healthy and safe work environment for our team, customers and other visitors
  • Identify areas of improvement, develop policies and procedures to reduce risk and improve safety and communicate this effectively to relevant stakeholders
  • Ensuring sign off on each set is completed by the Manager prior to customers being permitted to climb

Customer Service

  • Consistently strive to deliver customer experiences that are ‘above and beyond’ expectations to stoke the passion!
  • Seek to understand the needs and key motivators of the customer, identifying and acting on areas where we can improve

Team & Culture

  • Contribute to a positive team dynamic and attitude and maintain a professional working relationship with colleagues
  • Ensure you are well trained in rock climbing safety and instruction, as well as relevant areas of Rocktopia

Administration

  • Lead the development of management policies and procedures
  • Keep accurate records and organised administrative systems
  • Ensure the booking system is consistently working smoothly, that over-bookings are prevented and work closely with the team to ensure a high degree of customer service is provided for all bookings
  • Ensure Rocktopia is kept clean and tidy at all times and that a high cleanliness standard is maintained.

Job Requirements and Preferred Experience / Special Skills:

The successful candidate:

  • Ideal applicants will be keen members of the global climbing community and have a passion for the sport of bouldering and the growth of the industry.
  • Proven experience setting commercially appropriate indoor problems to a high and safe standard suitable for a commercial facility.
  • Proven experience setting competition appropriate indoor problems to a high and safe standard suitable for a commercial facility.
  • Experience of working under a safety management system which takes all practicable steps to avoid injury to customers, staff and public. Capable of recognising and neutralizing hazards in a climbing and fitness environment.
  • Able to organise a team of setters to ensure efficient setting. Able to collect, analyze, interpret and use climb data provided by the customers and gym.
  • Excel at working collaboratively with others and actioning team goals.
  • Provide positive, and industry leading interaction with customers, staff and vendors.
  • Able to deal with incidents and emergencies in an educated and professional manner.
