Job Description

Geopolitical developments have made the need for a smart and strong military clear. In the near future, the Netherlands could unintentionally become involved in a large-scale military conflict within Europe against an equal adversary. After years of downsizing and scarcity with all its consequences, the armed forces in all its components once again have the capacity to grow. This presents the organization of the entire ministry with major challenges in every area. It requires vision, new and different policies that optimally direct and support the armed forces and that guide a smart, strong military that stands in the midst of society. You can contribute to this as a senior policy officer at the Directorate-General Policy (DGB).

You will be placed in the newly established DGB Policy Expertise Pool and will work from there at the Directorate of Materiel, Living Environment, Real Estate and Sustainability (DMLVD), more specifically within the Sustainability cluster of the Department of Sustainability and Real Estate. This department is responsible for various policy areas, including policy on sustainability, and within that themes such as energy, circularity, and environment. This department is characterized by drive, results orientation, and especially collaboration with our environment. You will work at the political-administrative interface in a very dynamic time for Defense.

This is a temporary position for one year. DGB is currently undergoing a reorganization, in which DGB will grow by 100 FTEs. This position in principle offers a good starting position to be able to apply for positions that will be created as part of the reorganization.

Other Employment Conditions

The Ministry of Defense strongly emphasizes personal growth and career development and offers numerous opportunities for this. In addition to your salary, you will receive an Individual Choice Budget (IKB). The IKB consists of money (16.33% of your gross annual salary) and time. With the IKB, you make the choices that suit you and can partially assemble your employment conditions yourself. For example, you can choose to have a portion of your monthly income paid out when you wish. You can also convert this budget into leave or spend it on tax-friendly purposes.

We also believe it is important that you can combine working at Defense with your private life. Various leave arrangements (e.g., 75% paid parental leave) and flexible working hours contribute to a good balance. It is also possible to (temporarily) reduce your working hours by a few hours per week and build up additional IKB hours. In addition to a pension scheme with ABP, you will receive a monthly commuting allowance or, under favorable conditions, you can opt for a public transport subscription with unlimited travel throughout the Netherlands. If you only use the public transport subscription for commuting, you do not have to pay a contribution for it.

Special Provisions

  • A security investigation is part of the selection procedure; a Dutch nationality or a combined permit for residence and work (GVVA) is required for this.
  • An assessment may be part of the selection procedure.
  • Your application documents will be destroyed no later than three months after the completion of the selection procedure.
  • The vacancy is published both internally and externally within Defense. Any internal candidates will be considered first in the selection procedure before the selection is extended to external candidates.
  • The Ministry of Defense is committed to hiring employees who fall under the target group of the Job Opportunities Act. If you fall into this target group and are registered in the target group register? Then we also invite you to respond! Together with you, we will look at whether and how you can potentially fulfill this function.
  • Defense is an organization where integrity and professionalism are paramount. The way Defense employees should treat each other is described in the Defense Code of Conduct. The code of conduct forms the basis of what Defense understands by integrity. As an organization, we consider it important that new employees are aware of the Defense Code of Conduct.
