Behind our banking app is a backend that moves real money for real people every day, securely and reliably. As a Senior Backend Engineer (m/f/d) in a cross-functional product team, the team behind Banking, Transactions, and Investing, you will help shape the services at its core. You will work on a JVM backend (Kotlin and Java, Spring Boot) built on clean domain modeling, event-driven services, and a high standard of quality, in a regulated financial environment where correctness and trust are non-negotiable.

You will work closely and proactively with other backend and mobile developers, designers, and business owners in an agile environment with regular release cycles. Our flat organizational structure and lean decision-making processes foster a hands-on, collaborative atmosphere where your input helps shape the architecture, our way of working, and the people around you.

We develop in collaboration with AI. Coding tools live directly in our repositories, with guardrails and human review, and you remain responsible for what goes live. We are looking for you if you can guide these tools well, critically question their results, and maintain control over the outcome. And if you help the entire team get better here: by contributing to our AI Harness (the reusable tools and guardrails around the models) and sharing practices instead of keeping them to yourself.

Your tasks:

• Design, build, and further develop backend services in our product domain (Banking, Transactions, Investing)
• Cleanly model complex financial domains and keep our architecture healthy as it grows
• Maintain high standards for testing, reliability, and observability, and help others do the same
• Participate in code reviews, incident management, and secure, well-coordinated releases
• Utilize and evolve our AI Harness and share what works with the entire engineering team

What you should bring

• Experience in bringing features or epics from idea to production. You have been responsible for a real part of a product, in close collaboration with others.
• Production backend depth. Several years of experience in building and operating production backend services on the JVM (Kotlin and/or Java with Spring Boot), including event-driven systems (e.g., Kafka), PostgreSQL, and testing as a habit.
• You make teams better. You communicate clearly and constructively review, pair, mentor, and disagree.
• You work well with AI. You can guide AI coding tools, critically examine their results, and maintain responsibility for what goes live. Bonus: You have already built or shared reusable tooling (an "AI Harness") that has made a team faster.
• You are fluent in English, our company language. German is not a requirement.
• You stand behind the idea of using money as a lever for positive change.
• Bonus: Experience in a regulated or safety-critical environment (Fintech, Banking, Payments, Health, etc.).

Compensation

This position is an 80% role. €56,000–€62,400 gross per year, which is 80% of our full-time range of €70,000–€78,000 for this level.

Transparency is Queen (and King). That's why we provide a salary range for all jobs. We will conduct an individual assessment and classification into our transparent salary matrix once we get to know you better in the interview.

Where you can work from

We want to enable everyone at Tomorrow to manage their work and life flexibly and considering their own life circumstances. Home office and mobile work are an integral part of our "remote-friendly" work culture. At the same time, we believe in the special atmosphere and innovative power of real human interaction. Therefore, we ask you to come to our Hamburg office regularly, at least once every two weeks.
