Senior Backend Engineer - Core Engine / Decision Intelligence (m/f/d)

Our client develops innovative decision intelligence software for data-driven decisions and complex operational processes. The goal is to help organizations make dependencies transparent, evaluate courses of action, and make decisions whose logic and assumptions are comprehensible at all times. To achieve this, a powerful core technology is being built that combines structured knowledge, logical reasoning, planning, and AI components.

As a Senior Backend Engineer, you will design and build central core components of this software. In close collaboration with the CTO and the engineering team, you will translate technical concepts and algorithms into highly reliable software, design interfaces and data structures, and take responsibility for components from design to integration and validation.

Your Challenges:

• Core Development: Conception and implementation of backend components for representing dependencies, evaluating scenarios, and supporting reasoning and planning workflows.

• Architecture & APIs: Building clear APIs, data structures, and interfaces for seamless interaction of engine components and future extensions.

• Prototype Transformation: Transitioning prototypes and algorithmic concepts into maintainable, scalable software (including well-founded decisions regarding in-house development vs. integration of existing tools).

• Quality & Performance: Responsibility for component quality through automated tests, benchmarks, debugging, and profiling to ensure correctness and performance.

• Traceability & Diagnostics: Development of diagnostic tools and structures to make results traceable at all times with regard to inputs, model versions, and assumptions.

• Product Collaboration: Translation of customer use cases together with the product team into technical acceptance criteria and reusable core improvements.

• Engineering Standards: Active participation in code reviews, documentation, and build and deployment workflows for a clean codebase.

• Education: Successfully completed studies in Computer Science, Mathematics, Software Engineering, Physics, or a comparable technical qualification.

• Backend Expertise: Strong programming skills in at least one backend language (e.g., Python, Java, C++, Go, or Rust) and experience working with existing codebases.

• Foundation: Solid knowledge in algorithms, data structures, software design, and automated testing.

• Interfaces & Experience in API design and working with data storage and data processing systems, considering performance and reliability parameters.

• Mindset: Ability to independently break down complex and unclear problems, evaluate alternatives, and deliver reliable software increments.

• Communication & Working Style: Very good German and English skills, both written and spoken, and enjoyment of fast, iterative development steps in a team.

Advantageous (not a MUST):

Experience in at least one of the following areas is a plus:

• Graph-based systems or knowledge representation

• Planning, scheduling, or optimization

• Rule engines or constraint solvers

• Integration of ML / LLM components

• Transitioning research prototypes into production
