Senior Accountant or Assistant Manager

Full Time 80000.00 - 100000.00

Job description

About Our Client

Several well-regarded Christchurch chartered accounting firms are looking for experienced Senior Accountants to join their public practice teams as either strong Senior Accountants, or stepping up into Assistant Manager roles.

These firms are growing, and they want people who can confidently manage client work, provide guidance to junior staff, and contribute to the team’s ongoing success.

If you enjoy a mix of compliance and advisory work, like taking ownership of your clients, and want to be part of a supportive and approachable team, this could be your next step.

You’ll be preparing and reviewing financial statements, GST, FBT, PAYE, and income tax returns, helping clients with day-to-day queries, mentoring junior staff, reviewing work, and tackling more complex assignments as you progress.

These roles suit people who are proactive, organised, and comfortable managing multiple clients and deadlines.

Please note: You must have at least 4 years of experience in a New Zealand public practice firm, and full work rights for New Zealand.

About the Role:

As an Accountant, you'll work with a diverse client base, providing high-quality financial reporting, tax compliance, and business advisory services. This role is perfect for a professional who enjoys a collaborative team environment and values the lifestyle of city living.

Key Responsibilities:
  • BAS & Tax Compliance: Prepare and review financial statements and tax returns (GST, FBT, PAYE, provisional tax, year-end filings), ensuring deadlines and accuracy are met.
  • Client Communication: Work directly with clients to gather information, answer queries, and provide clear guidance and advisory.
Team Support & Mentoring: Support junior accountants with mentoring, training, and review of work as needed.
  • Process Improvement: Identify opportunities to improve team efficiency, workflows, and accuracy.
Qualifications:
  • Diploma or Degree in accounting, finance, or a related field in NZ, with CA or CPA qualification (or working toward)
  • Strong understanding of New Zealand tax, accounting standards, GST, FBT, and payroll obligations.
  • High attention to detail and confident problem-solving abilities.
  • Clear, professional communication, with the ability to explain accounting and compliance concepts to clients and team members.
  • Collaborative and supportive, with a willingness to mentor junior staff.
  • Ability to manage multiple clients, changing priorities, and a fast-paced workload.
What’s on Offer:

This role combines professional growth with the unbeatable lifestyle of working in Christchurch. Enjoy the stunning surroundings, outdoor activities, and vibrant community while advancing your career within a supportive and respected firm.
  • Competitive Christchurch salary packages
  • Flexible hours and glide time
  • Bonus opportunities
  • Social events and team activities
  • Professional development and CA/CPA support
  • Friendly, supportive, and collaborative teams
