Mō te tūnga | About the role Defence Science & Technology (DST) is a civilian unit within the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF), delivering trusted scientific advice and technical support to the Army, Navy, and Air Force. Based in Devonport, DST brings together a multidisciplinary team tackling challenges from the undersea domain through to space—supporting the NZDF to operate effectively in increasingly complex and contested environments. You will join our Autonomous Systems Team, conducting applied research and development of autonomous systems for Defence applications. This role is part of the DST's efforts to enhance the NZDF's capabilities in areas such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), underwater vehicles, and ground-based systems. Your work will contribute to the development of innovative solutions that meet the needs of the NZDF and support its operations. Key responsibilities include: • Conducting research and development on autonomous systems for Defence applications. • Collaborating with other DST teams and stakeholders to identify and address technical challenges. • Developing and maintaining relationships with industry partners, academia, and government agencies to leverage their expertise and capabilities. • Providing scientific advice and technical support to the NZDF on autonomous systems-related matters. • Staying up-to-date with advancements in autonomous systems technologies and applying this knowledge to Defence applications. • Participating in project planning, execution, and evaluation, including identifying and mitigating risks. • Developing and maintaining documentation of research findings, methodologies, and results. • Presenting research outcomes and technical information to stakeholders, including the NZDF and other government agencies. Requirements: • A relevant postgraduate degree (Master's or Doctorate) in a field such as engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics, or a related discipline. • At least 2 years of research experience in autonomous systems or a related field. • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively. • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to present complex technical information to non-technical audiences. • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment. • Familiarity with Defence-related technologies and applications is desirable but not essential. Benefits: • Opportunity to work on cutting-edge research projects that have the potential to make a significant impact on Defence capabilities. • Collaborative and dynamic work environment with a multidisciplinary team of experts. • Access to state-of-the-art facilities, equipment, and resources. • Professional development opportunities, including training and mentorship programs. • Flexible working arrangements, including remote work options. How to apply: • Please submit your application, including a CV and cover letter, through our online portal. • Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled. • For more information about this role or the application process, please contact [insert contact details].
