Job description
Real Estate Energy Manager
Organizational Unit Buildings Logistics Division Function Engineer and Specialist Job Code 104020 Maximum Class 17 Corps Administrative and Technical Staff Activity Rate 100% Application Deadline 11-22-2026 Reference 7133
Job Description
The University of Geneva manages a real estate portfolio of over 200,000 m², comprising teaching and research buildings with complex technical infrastructures in science and medicine. With an annual energy budget of approximately 18 MCHF and consumption levels among the highest in the canton, energy management is a major strategic challenge.
In the context of an energy transition, rising operating costs, and increasing complexity of facilities, the University is creating an Energy Manager position to strengthen its internal capacity to manage energy performance, sustainably control costs, and lead the environmental transformation of its real estate portfolio.
Your Mission
Across the University, you will manage the energy and environmental performance of the real estate portfolio. You will work transversally on owned and leased buildings, as well as on buildings operated by third parties when the University bears the energy costs.
Your role has a dual purpose: to sustainably control energy consumption and costs, and to lead the reduction of the portfolio's environmental footprint in a decarbonization trajectory. You will identify optimization levers, prioritize actions, manage their implementation, and monitor their results. Depending on the scope, you will directly manage energy improvement projects for facilities or coordinate them with competent partners, particularly the OCBA.
Reporting to the Operations sector of the Real Estate Department within the Buildings and Logistics Division, you will assume the following main responsibilities:
- You will ensure the overall management of energy consumption and expenditures for the portfolio, with a clear objective of cost reduction and measurable savings.
- You will conduct building-by-building energy optimization initiatives, either independently or with the support of specialized consultants, and work in close coordination with the technical managers – Building Operations.
- You will support users, particularly in technical buildings, laboratories, and complex infrastructures, to rationalize needs and optimize energy usage without compromising research, teaching, or operational requirements.
- You will identify, prioritize, and manage energy improvement projects for facilities, such as equipment replacement, modernization of technical installations, optimization of existing systems, or deployment of renewable energy production.
- You will structure the portfolio's energy data, develop useful monitoring tools for management, produce technical and economic analyses, support management in their decisions, and oversee the monitoring of energy and CO₂ indicators, and structure the portfolio's decarbonization trajectory, in line with institutional objectives.
The incumbent may be assigned other duties based on the Service's needs.
Required Title and Competencies
- You hold a higher education degree (HES or equivalent) in Energy Engineering, HVAC, Building Thermal, or a related field, and have at least five years of proven experience in the technical operation of complex buildings or in the energy management of a significant real estate portfolio.
- You can analyze consumption, translate data into decisions, lead optimization initiatives, and manage technical projects in a multi-stakeholder environment. You are comfortable at the interface between field operations, external consultants, users, and management. You combine analytical rigor, a sense of priorities, autonomy, and a results-oriented approach. A good understanding of scientific, technical, or hospital-university environments is a significant asset.
