Job description

Introduction

Do you have a language knack and know how to convey information clearly? As a Reservist Translator at Defensie, you will perform translation assignments on the most challenging locations worldwide, but also in the Netherlands. You must be at least willing and suitable. You can be deployed for all Defense components to support our military personnel in communication, both nationally and internationally.

This is what you'll do

As a Reservist Translator, you will support your military colleagues in intercultural communication with foreign units, local authorities, and the local population. Besides translation assignments during missions, operations, and training exercises abroad, you will occasionally provide culture workshops and/or conversation lessons (also) for Dutch military personnel going on mission, military language cards translate or support military training. The duration of the assignments varies from one day to several months.

We are looking for Reservist Translators for the following languages:

  • Russian
  • Ukrainian
  • Arabic (Iraqi, Palestinian-Jordanian and Syrian-Lebanese)
  • Bosnian
  • French

Only applicants who speak one or more of these languages will be invited to the next stage. When you speak a language that is not currently listed above, we recommend checking our other reserve vacancies. There are three vacancies for Reservist Translator, namely Junior, Medior, and Senior. Each level has specific language and training requirements.

PLUS POINTS OF THIS FUNCTION

  • Work environment: nowhere will you find such a tight team of colleagues as at Defensie.
  • Work setting: translation assignments can take place in a special environment, in the field, abroad, and sometimes in a conflict zone.
  • Challenge: translation assignments are content-wise diverse and require great responsibility.

This is where you'll work

The majority of translation assignments will take place during missions, operations, and training exercises abroad. However, for example, visits from foreign delegations, training exercises, and international military sports events can also be deployed in the Netherlands. The country of deployment and the nature of the assignment depend on your language specialization and the organization's task.

Make sure you know what you're getting into and visit the Reservist Translator Information Session. This information session is a mandatory part of the application procedure.
