Job description

Introduction

Do you have a completed university education in (military) History, experience in conducting historical research? And does joining major missions feel like the ultimate challenge for you? Then apply for the position of Reservist Operational War Diarist. You will describe and explain what is happening and how decisions are made in so-called diaries during major missions.

What you will do

As a Reservist Operational War Diarist (OWD), you will be part of the staff of a unit, usually at battalion level or higher. You will join the larger (inter)national missions and record everything in the diaries, which reflect the events in a mission area as factually and completely as possible.

You will not only write down what is happening in a mission area, but also how analyses have led to certain decisions. Furthermore, the diaries serve as a source of information for the commander in the mission area and can be used to draw lessons for the future.

Attending all relevant meetings (such as commanders' meetings), all planning cycles prior to operations, daily updates, and upscales in combat situations are part of your responsibilities. You will also collect planning documents, patrol reports, combat reports, and after-action reports.

We are looking for someone with strong analytical skills, excellent networking skills, communication skills (verbal and written), and a sense of proportions and interests. You must be confident, persistent, and able to ask follow-up questions. Finally, you are fluent in English (spoken and written) and (preferably) have knowledge of military operations at a higher tactical level, both peacekeeping and combat operations.

Note: as a reservist, you will have a zero-hours contract. Depending on your availability, you will make agreements with your commander about how many hours you will be deployed. This can be a fixed number of hours per week or per month, or per exercise or project.

PLUS POINTS OF THIS FUNCTION

  • Salary: in addition to your hourly wage, you will receive a holiday allowance, year-end bonus, and pension accrual pro rata to the number of hours worked. You will also receive a travel allowance on a duty travel basis.
  • Work atmosphere: nowhere will you be part of such a close-knit team of colleagues as at Defense.
  • Challenge: You will join the larger (inter)national missions and record everything in the diaries.

Where you will work

You will be placed within the Military network of the 1st Civil-Military Interaction Command (1CMICo). You will participate in exercises and should be aware that you may be deployed for a duration of at least 4 months.
