Job Description

As a Release Train Engineer, you can make an impact on the transition to SAFe within the IT company of the Ministry of Defence. Various JIVC departments are dividing their activities into Agile Release Trains (ARTs), and your expertise is urgently needed for this.

Someone who, with in-depth knowledge of agile, SAFe, change management, and a coaching attitude, can ensure that IT professionals and processes work better and smarter? As a Release Train Engineer, you will be closely involved in the implementation of Agile working within the Joint Information Communication Command (JIVC). With your knowledge and experience within SAFe, you know how best to shape an ART, how to best launch it, and how to bypass most pitfalls in this process. And once the train is running? Then you know better than anyone how your ART(s) can most effectively define deliverables, pick up work, navigate dependencies, and make planning a success. Specifically, you ensure a smooth and predictable flow of value creation within the ART and across the chain.

In addition, you bear (shared) responsibility for organizing, preparing, facilitating, and improving ART events, such as PI Planning, ART Syncs, and Inspect & Adapt.

You coordinate dependencies between teams and with other ARTs or external parties. You will work closely with Product Management, System Architects, and Business Owners to achieve both business and technical objectives.

Depending on the department and the maturity of the SAFe transition, other tasks and responsibilities will be assigned, in line with your role as RTE within the JIVC. All your activities will contribute to the successful execution of our SAFe transition.

You will work in a challenging, complex IT environment where colleagues are both civilians and military personnel. Your experience will also be valuable in an environment where employees are still learning agile and/or SAFe, and where critical questions about the process can be a daily occurrence. You know how to engage, enthuse, and convert people into SAFe ambassadors by showing them that a well-managed ART is of added value.

You will participate in the Agile Working Group, where you will share knowledge with colleagues, exchange experiences, and work on innovative solutions during intervisions, interactive sessions, and the annual Agile Day.

Job Requirements

You are a connector who effortlessly brings teams, stakeholders, and managers into alignment. You move easily between strategic goals and daily execution, and you have the expertise to manage large-scale dependencies. You ensure a working environment where people and teams collaborate optimally and deliver value for the entire Ministry of Defence.

Also important:

• You have a WO (higher professional education) work and intellectual level, preferably demonstrable through a diploma (or aptitude test) in the direction of technology, business administration, or IT, or a comparable military education within the Dutch Defence Academy;
• You have several years of proven experience/success in setting up and managing one or more Agile Release Trains (>50 FTE) within a large and/or political organization;
• You are SAFe RTE (v 5.0 or higher) certified. Other SAFe certifications are a strong plus;
• You have extensive knowledge and experience with program and project management methodologies, development techniques, and improvement approaches such as Agile, SAFe, Scrum, Kanban & PRINCE-2;
• Other relevant certifications are a plus; think of PSM, PSPO, Lean Six Sigma, IPMA, etc.;
• You speak and write Dutch at a professional level (minimum C1).
