The Role
Join the office of Hon Dr Shane Reti's team as a Press Secretary (Level 2) and contribute to the communication of government policies across the Pacific Peoples, Science, Innovation and Technology, Statistics and Universities portfolios. This is a unique opportunity to leverage your communications expertise to translate complex government policy into clear, compelling narratives. You will work directly with the Minister on the development and promotion of key communications strategies across the portfolios.
Your Impact
- Lead strategic communications to advance key government initiatives.
- Write powerful press releases, speeches, Q&A, talking points and social media content.
- Build trusted relationships with media and stakeholders.
- Stay ahead of the news cycle – anticipate stories and shape narratives.
What We Are Looking For
- Exceptional writing and communication skills, able to tailor writing for different audiences and prepare a Minister for interviews with confidence.
- A sharp understanding of media dynamics and excellent relationships with journalists.
- Keen political instincts and deep awareness of the political landscape.
- Calm and confident providing sound advice under pressure and making good decisions at pace.
- The ability to build and maintain relationships across the Minister’s office, agencies, and stakeholders.
- A trusted team member who will work closely with the Senior Private Secretary, Senior Ministerial Advisor and Private Secretaries to integrate communications with the Minister’s programme, coaching others on media and communications as needed.
- A willingness to travel with the Minister to events and meetings across the country.
- Experience or interest in pacific peoples, science, innovation and technology, statistics and universities is a plus.
The Opportunity
This is a rare chance to be a part of a high-functioning team at Parliament and contribute meaningfully to national policy. You will be based on-site at Parliament, working closely with the Minister and a dedicated team. This is an events-based position based on the parliamentary term. The salary band for this is $111,458-$138,704 per annum with a likely appointment range of $111,458-$123,842 per annum (based on skills and experience).

Eligibility Requirements
It is a vital component of the role to hold a security clearance. There are certain criteria that must be met in this regard, and you must be an eligible candidate.
Applicants must:
- Be NZ Citizens or Permanent Residents.
- Obtain and maintain a Top-Secret national security clearance.
