Job description

Joining Mines Saint-Étienne means committing to an institution where science and innovation build a more sustainable future. An institution of excellence where everyone has the opportunity to reach their full potential and contribute to tackling tomorrow's challenges.

Ranked among the best engineering schools in France and recognized worldwide, our school, a member of the Institut Mines-Télécom, trains tomorrow's talents while actively contributing to addressing major industrial, digital, and environmental challenges. With us, you will join a community of 500 employees, 2500 students, and participate in an ambitious project: combining academic excellence, cutting-edge research, and positive societal impact.

The Institut Mines-Télécom federates French engineering schools around major industrial, digital, energy, and ecological challenges. With its 8 public Grandes Écoles and 2 affiliated schools, it is the leading public institute dedicated to engineers and managers. Together, we imagine and build a sustainable future by training the actors who will shape tomorrow's transitions.

At Mines Saint-Étienne, our research centers are the beating heart of our School.

Conceived as true innovation hubs, our five Training and Research Centers articulate their expertise around major industrial, environmental, societal, and technological issues.

Their mission? To imagine the world of tomorrow by combining academic excellence and concrete impact.

Do you dream of a clean, efficient, and sustainable industry? The SPIN center makes it its priority.

Energy, environment, industrial processes… we design systems to produce better, with less.

The objective? To limit environmental impact, reduce energy consumption, and boost efficiency.

🔧 In a rapidly changing world, our teams deploy their scientific creativity to support the industry of the future.

And you, ready to innovate with us?

🎯 What we expect from you

As a post-doctoral researcher, you will be at the core of our research and innovation missions, assigned to the SPIN Center.

The "Industrial and Natural Process Sciences" (SPIN) center is a research, teaching, and technology transfer center recognized for its expertise in Process Engineering applied to divided solids. It serves innovation for industrial companies facing digital and environmental transition. The recruited person will be integrated into the "Solid Transformation Processes and Instrumentation" (PTSI) department and the Georges Friedel Laboratory UMR CNRS 5307.

The proposed project will involve developing gas sensors from functional materials. The study of solid/gas interactions will be conducted in parallel with electrical characterizations under complex gaseous atmospheres (test benches with controlled pollutant generation).

This study will be carried out in collaboration with researchers from IMT Mines Albi, who are responsible for the synthesis of sensitive materials, and from IMT Atlantique for the subsequent integration of the sensor into clothing.

As part of sensor development, the sensitive materials will be deposited on substrates previously equipped with electrodes. This phase must be optimized to perform reproducible characterizations. Stability, sensitivity to different gases, and selectivity to a given gas will be studied. For this purpose, tests under target gases will be carried out and analyzed, initially in a simple atmosphere, leading to tests under atmospheres more representative of a real environment. Subsequently, adsorption studies will be conducted, and chemisorption equipment will be used to study the solid (sensitive material)/gas interaction and provide an understanding of detection, capture, or treatment mechanisms.

🔍 What we are looking for

You hold a PhD in engineering sciences/chemistry/materials and ideally have experience in the shaping of organic or ceramic materials by wet methods, in measuring electrical or electrochemical properties, or in the characterization of gas sensors.

· Holder of a doctorate in Engineering Sciences, Chemistry, or Materials

🌍 Why join Mines Saint-Étienne?

We support each of our employees on the path to excellence, with the conviction that together, we can have a lasting and significant impact on our world.

Joining Mines Saint-Étienne offers the opportunity to find:

· A stimulating environment: state-of-the-art experimental facilities, a strong international network (T.I.M.E., EULIST), and human-sized campuses with an urban environment.

· Real impact: contractual research projects amounting to €11 million/year, mainly with industrial partners, a scientific culture center, La Rotonde, which has been engaged in science mediation for 25 years, attracting over 50,000 visitors/year.

· Incomparable quality of life: 49 days of leave and compensatory days off, partial remote work, 75% coverage of public transport costs, financial support for carpooling and cycling, and a social barometer where 83% of employees praise the quality of work-life balance.

Let's build a more sustainable future through science, engineering, and meaningful projects.
