🎯 What we expect from you
As a postdoctoral researcher, you are at the core of the research and innovation missions of the Health Engineering Center. You will join the i4S team to develop the scientific foundations of a new generation of population-level digital twins (PDTs) in healthcare, in close connection with the company Dali.
The Health Engineering Center conducts research at the interface of engineering, mathematics, computer science, and health. Its work combines modeling, simulation, artificial intelligence, and data science to address clinical, organizational, and population-level issues in collaboration with academic, hospital, and industrial stakeholders.
Dali (Decision Aid · Live Innovation) is an innovative consulting firm specializing in modeling, simulation, and artificial intelligence applied to the healthcare system. Its ambition is to transform the care system through cutting-edge, data-driven engineering: creation of digital twins, predictive modeling, patient pathway optimization, hospital service modeling, and improvement of healthcare organization performance. Dali was co-founded in early 2025 by Martin PRODEL (PhD, 12 years of experience in health data, ex-Heva) and Vincent AUGUSTO (PhD, HDR, Professor, 20 years of experience in health engineering and research, Mines Saint-Étienne).
Strategic Objective: Prepare the scientific building blocks for PDTs within 3 to 5 years, beyond the initial industrial demonstrators already underway.
The postdoctoral position should address challenges in dynamic cohort modeling, virtual patient generation, transition learning, and counterfactual scenario simulation.
Your main responsibilities:
You will design and formalize mathematical and stochastic models of patient trajectories: Markov chains, multi-state models, state-space models, Markov decision processes, Monte Carlo simulation, and hybrid approaches.
You will develop PDT prototypes in Python capable of learning their parameters from real data, generating virtual trajectories, and testing therapeutic or care management scenarios.
You will propose methods for calibration, estimation, optimization, uncertainty quantification, and model validation; you will compare approaches on use cases derived from cohorts, registries, or real-world data.
You will contribute to the scientific valorization of the work (publications, conferences, software), to the formalization of transferable components for DALI, and you will report on the progress to the project's scientific manager.
Your ability to transition from a scientific problem to a formal model and then to a robust implementation will be essential. The position requires a strong interest in applied mathematics, algorithms, scientific programming, and interdisciplinary research.
🔍 What we are looking for
You must hold a:
PhD (Bac + 8) in Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Control Engineering, Operations Research, Industrial Engineering, Quantitative Data Science, or a related field.
Scientific Profile Sought:
Solid background in probability, statistics, stochastic processes, optimization, modeling and simulation, and/or dynamical systems.
Aptitude for the healthcare domain.
Expected Skills:
Advanced proficiency in scientific Python (NumPy, pandas, SciPy, scikit-learn, or equivalents) and good software development practices, version control, and reproducibility.
Significant experience with at least one family of dynamic models: Markov / MDP, multi-state models, Monte Carlo, differential equations, state-space models, or agent-based / discrete-event simulation.
Ability to articulate mathematical models and parameter estimation, calibration, sensitivity analysis, validation, uncertainty quantification.
Proficiency in written and oral scientific English (B2 level minimum, C1 appreciated); ability to write articles and present work in an international context.
Your Additional Assets:
Experience with longitudinal data, health data, cohorts, clinical trials, or real-world data.
Knowledge of a simulation environment (AnyLogic, SimPy, MATLAB/Simulink, or equivalent) and/or a compiled language (C++, Java).
Experience publishing in journals or conferences in modeling, simulation, artificial intelligence, operations research, or digital health.
