Ko tōu ake mahi - What you’ll do
The Mental Health, Addiction and Suicide Prevention Strategy and Policy Group supports the Ministry's role as chief advisor to New Zealand’s first Minister for Mental Health, providing leadership both across the health sector and government on mental health, addiction, and suicide prevention matters.
Mental distress, addiction, and suicide are challenges that affect people and whānau across the country – your work will help make a real difference.
As a Policy Analyst, you will contribute to challenging and rewarding strategy and policy work that helps to improve the way we support mental health and wellbeing in New Zealand. Our work covers a wide range of areas such as system-level strategy and funding for mental health and wellbeing, substance use-related harm, maternal, child and youth mental health, legislation governing compulsory mental health care, implementation of the Suicide Prevention Action Plan 2025-2029 and work with other government agencies in areas such as forensic mental health care, among other things.
In this role you will:
Help shape strategy and policy work that supports mental health, addiction, and suicide prevention efforts across New Zealand now and into the future
Assist with development of strategy and policy, prepare advice to the Minister for Mental Health
Support implementation and monitor progress across a range of initiatives
Grow your policy expertise with coaching and on-the-job support from experienced Senior and Principal Policy Analysts
Be a part of a collaborative team, working with colleagues across the Ministry of Health, Health New Zealand, and other government agencies.
Ko ngā pūkenga ōu - What you’ll bring
For this role you will need to have:
A tertiary qualification – ideally in public policy, health, or a related field
Experience working in or with government, with an understanding of public policy and the machinery of government
Analytical and critical thinking ability
A can-do attitude, enthusiasm for learning, and a strong commitment to delivering results
Excellent written communication skills, proven ability to produce clear and compelling writing
Strong relationship-building and interpersonal skills.
