Job description
What is it about?
Do you prefer building with open source rather than license keys and automating everything you get your hands on?
Then you've come to the right place! We are looking for a Platform Engineer who enjoys long-term customer projects and builds platforms from open-source components – from Linux and automation to CI/CD and containers, whether in the public cloud, in the customer's data center, or somewhere in between. In short: a generalist for the entire stack, who can also kubernetize a legacy application.
At cloudpunks, we believe we can make a difference! We design, implement, and operate platform and cloud solutions – as a Kubernetes Certified Service Provider (KCSP) and CNCF Silver Member.
You will be part of our team and in direct contact with our customers & partners. In joint projects, we modernize applications, build platforms from open-source components, and ensure that everything is deployed and operated automatically. We want to implement awesome projects – with cool technology that really helps the customer!
Your Tasks!
This is what you will do with us:
Kubernetizing Applications: You will take existing applications apart, write Dockerfiles and Helm Charts, and bring them cleanly to Kubernetes – from legacy Java monoliths to fresh microservices.
Platforms from Open-Source Components: Building Kubernetes platforms with what the CNCF ecosystem offers: Ingress controllers, cert-manager, Harbor as a registry, Keycloak for identity, Vault or OpenBao for secrets. Cloud-agnostic, on-premises, or hybrid.
Infrastructure as Code: Terraform or OpenTofu, Ansible, Helm, and Kustomize – you will automate everything that can be automated and pour every component into versioned code.
CI/CD & GitOps: Building and optimizing CI/CD pipelines with GitLab CI or GitHub Actions. GitOps workflows with ArgoCD or Flux.
Security & Policies: Policies with Kyverno or OPA/Gatekeeper, image scanning with Trivy, runtime security with Falco. You will build secure baselines from day 1.
Observability: Building monitoring stacks with Prometheus, Grafana, Loki, and OpenTelemetry – you will ensure that our customers know what is happening on their platform. With OpenCost, you'll also know what it costs them.
Backup, Recovery & Lifecycle: Backup and restore concepts with Velero, cluster and component upgrades, lifecycle management. You will ensure that the platform not only runs but also remains recoverable and maintainable – as code, not by clicking.
Customer Consulting & Enablement: You will work embedded in customer teams, participate in stand-ups, and empower teams to operate their platform independently.
Project examples from our daily work:
Containerization of legacy Java applications and migration to Kubernetes for a financial company
On-premises Kubernetes platform with Harbor, Keycloak, and ArgoCD for an industrial company
Migration of VM-based workloads to Kubernetes with Helm and GitLab CI for an e-commerce company
Secrets management with Vault and Policy-as-Code with Kyverno for an insurance company
Observability stack with Prometheus, Grafana, Loki, and OpenTelemetry for a healthcare company
Backup and restore concept with Velero for a logistics company
Your Profile
Must-have (without these, it will be difficult):
Linux & Containers: Solid Linux knowledge and experience with Docker or containers – you know what's happening inside the container and why.
Kubernetes: At least 2 years of practical experience with Kubernetes, whether vanilla, in the cloud, or on-premises.
Infrastructure as Code: Experience with Terraform/OpenTofu or Ansible as well as Helm and/or Kustomize.
CI/CD: Experience with at least one CI/CD tool (GitLab CI, GitHub Actions, Jenkins) for automated deployments.
Networking: Understanding of DNS, TLS, Load Balancing, and container networking.
Nice-to-have (makes you even more interesting):
GitOps: Experience with ArgoCD or Flux.
Security: Experience with Kyverno, OPA/Gatekeeper, Trivy, Falco, or Vault.
Observability: Experience with Prometheus, Grafana, Loki, or OpenTelemetry.
Identity & Registry: Experience with Keycloak and Harbor.
Cloud Providers: Initial experience with AWS or Azure doesn't hurt – but it's not a must.
Certifications: CKA, CKAD, CKS, LFCS, or other CNCF certifications.
What you should bring:
Communication: You can explain technical concepts understandably – in German and English.
Self-Responsibility: You work independently and take responsibility for your work.
Teamwork: You enjoy working embedded in customer teams and are a team player.
Willingness to Learn: You stay up-to-date and continuously learn new technologies.
