Piping and Layout/Steel Structure Engineer (m/w/d)

As Piping and Layout/Steel Structure Engineer (m/w/d), you will take on a central role in the Mechanical Design Team and bring your experience to bear to plan and install our modular plant technology for our customers.

In this key position, you will be responsible for piping specifications and material classes, efficient route planning, determining piping construction, and conducting inspections in collaboration with our suppliers and subcontractors.

Tasks

  • Understanding of piping lists, creating 2D-P&IDs with piping lists as 3D-CAD models for piping layout and design for the plant layout, as well as creating corresponding MTOs and BOMs.
  • Preliminary preparation of general piping arrangements and piping isometrics for the assigned unit or area.
  • Evaluation and analysis of all customer requirements for piping, creating the necessary designs according to the company's piping specifications, identifying deviations, recommending suitable alternatives, and a security plan.
  • Carrying out technical tasks assigned by the leading engineer at feasibility, conceptual, basic engineering, FEED, detail design, and EPC/EPCM projects.
  • Checking the permissible loads on supports (pumps, static equipment, etc.) according to WRC-107.
  • Dynamical analysis (modal, harmonic).
  • Checking piping isometrics on reference P&IDs.
  • Participation in internal and external 3D model reviews.
  • Knowledge of hydraulic design (flow rates, velocities, pressure drops).
  • Mechanical piping design (thickness calculation) according to ASME B31.1/B31.3/EN 13480, etc.
  • Carrying out piping design for the assigned unit or area in coordination with the responsible piping engineer for piping load, including specifications/standards for piping design.
  • Preliminary preparation of piping and bulk material takeoffs (MTOs) and bills of material (BoM).
  • Development of piping specifications (material classes, piping plan, nominal values of elements, connection specifications), including insulation and heat loss according to international standards.
  • Participation in the development of P&IDs, package specifications, construction specifications, project schedules, project budgets, and construction planning.
  • Planning and participation in all inspection/proof activities related to the respective piping and equipment packages.
  • Creation of data sheets for valves and piping.
  • Analysis of piping flexibility according to ASME B31.1/B31.3/EN 13480.
  • Preliminary preparation of specifications for stress analysis.
  • Preliminary preparation of critical piping list.
  • Collaboration with the Mechanical Department on all matters related to the loading and use of equipment.
  • Creation of specifications, data sheets, material requirements (MR), technical offer tables (TBT), and review of supplier drawings for all marked holding elements.
  • Checking the type and position of the holding element on the IFC isometric in accordance with approved load isometrics.
  • Collaboration with the leading piping engineer on the selection of applicable standards, codes, and specifications and their incorporation into the project specifications.
  • Creation of piping class index and summary.
  • Provision of input data for piping component data for the 3D tool data bank.
  • Preliminary preparation of material requirements (MR) and technical offer tables (TBT)
  • Preliminary preparation of mechanical data for the piping list and monitoring of all MTO activities. This includes requirements for insulation and coating of piping, as well as pressure and NDE tests.
  • Preliminary preparation of project specifications for the manufacture, inspection, and testing of piping (if no customer specifications are available).
  • Monitoring compliance with industrial regulations and standards, as well as work instructions, specifications, and standards of the department for the assigned project.
  • Collaboration with other departments, customers, suppliers, subcontractors, and third parties according to the instructions of the leading engineer.
  • Participation in interdisciplinary meetings, project meetings, meetings with customers and suppliers
  • Ensuring the technical quality and accuracy of the work performed and the timely completion of assigned tasks.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree or equivalent degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • More than 5 years of experience in piping and design planning in the oil and gas industry, in refineries, in petrochemistry, in the chemical industry, or in related fields
  • Familiarity with international codes and standards, as well as technical practices used in the industry, including ASME B31.3, ASME B36.10, ASME B16.5, and ASME B36.19, EN13480, EN10220, and EN1127EN - AN-SI/ASME-Codes
  • Good knowledge of construction software AutoCAD, Solidworks, or Revit
  • Design of steel and plastic piping and mechanical understanding
  • Knowledge of pressure, temperature, flow rate, and fill level variables, as well as instruments for measuring and controlling them
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in German and English
  • Drawing skills and attention to detail

Especially advantageous

  • Additional technical knowledge in the fields of SOEC, SMR, fuel cells, clean fuels, energy storage systems, and/or chemical synthesis (e.g., ammonia, methanol)
  • Competent user of the CAESAR II software
  • Knowledge of Swagelok pipes and fittings
  • Competent user of material management software and experience with material/corrosion studies
  • Knowledge of vessels, pumps, and heat exchanger performance
  • Knowledge of compliance with regulations, zoning, and building codes
