Oriel Bickerton Internship

The MOTAT Society, together with MOTAT’s Collections Hub, is pleased to offer a project-based internship opportunity for a student or recent graduate. This internship honours the legacy of Oriel Bickerton, whose 25-year contribution helped shape MOTAT’s historical village and establish the Textile Collection. Her commitment to collection care and preservation continues to influence MOTAT’s practice today. This is a paid internship with a fixed stipend of $3,000 and an expected commitment of approximately 20 weeks. The successful candidate will work closely with the Collections Hub team to develop and implement a project that showcases their skills and interests. The project may involve tasks such as: • Conducting research on MOTAT’s textile collection; • Developing a digital exhibit or display; • Creating educational resources for schools or community groups; • Collaborating with other teams within MOTAT to integrate the project into existing programs. This internship is an excellent opportunity for students and recent graduates to gain hands-on experience in museum work, develop their skills and knowledge, and contribute to the preservation of New Zealand’s industrial heritage. To be eligible for this internship, applicants must: • Be currently enrolled or have recently completed a degree in a relevant field (e.g., museum studies, history, anthropology); • Have a strong interest in museums, collections, and cultural heritage; • Possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills; • Be able to work independently and as part of a team; • Demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. The successful candidate will be required to provide their own transportation to and from MOTAT’s Collections Hub, located in Auckland. This internship is open to students and recent graduates who are New Zealand citizens or permanent residents.
