Introductory Text

Apply as a Junior Officer Aviation Operations Support with the Air Force and become the right-hand person of our aviators (pilots).

What you will do

As a Junior Officer Aviation Operations Support with the Air Force, you will support the pilot at a fighter jet airbase (Leeuwarden or Volkel), at the Defence Helicopter Command (Gilze-Rijen) or with transport aircraft (Eindhoven). With fighter jets, you will work in the Operations Support or Mission Planning department, or at Eindhoven in the Mission Execution Cell or Mission Planning Cell as a Dispatcher. There you will support the pilot with arranging all sorts of mission-related matters. At the Defence Helicopter Command and Air Transport, you will perform these two specialisms in one role.

Operations Support (OPS)

Working in Operations Support requires a lot of responsibility. From your coordinating role, you are responsible for the daily flight program, airspace requests, and long-term planning. You ensure that you are aware of which missions are flown that day and which areas in the airspace are not permitted for flying. Furthermore, pilots must meet all sorts of conditions to actually fly – we call this ‘flight ready’. You ensure that this is kept up-to-date and make the arrangements with departments that make this possible.

Mission Planning (MP)

At the Mission Planning department, you will start the day with preparations for the day's flights. After consulting with the pilot, you will enter the various mission-related data into the mission planning system, after which you will print various flight charts and documents that the pilots need for the flight. Then you will load all other data that the pilot needs into the aircraft on a data carrier. After the flight, the pilots must debrief and evaluate their missions, which is also called ‘debriefing’. You will collect the flight data they hand over to you and ensure that it is entered into the mission planning system. All this work must be arranged in a short time; you must therefore be able to deliver accurate work under great stress and be familiar with ICT tools.

Flight Dispatcher

As a Flight Dispatcher, you ensure that the missions carried out by the transport aircraft of the Air Mobility Command (AMC) run smoothly. You primarily do this by creating the routes that the aircraft will fly worldwide.

For example, on one day you might work on a flight assignment for supplying military personnel in deployment areas with the C130, but also on a flight assignment for a General or Minister traveling by Gulfstream to a conference in another country. You will also plan tactical flights; think for instance of dropping cargo and paratroopers with the C130. At the AMC, there are two departments where you can work from your role. You will first start in the Mission Planning Cell (MPC), where you learn the basics and are responsible for flight preparation. As soon as you have mastered this, you can be trained in the Mission Execution Cell (MEC), where you will provide support for flights that are in the execution phase.

Where you will work

You will start at a fighter jet airbase (Volkel or Leeuwarden), at the Defence Helicopter Command (Gilze-Rijen) or with Transport Aircraft (Eindhoven). You will participate in exercises and must take into account that you may be deployed abroad.

But before you start working, you will first follow the Junior Officer Training at the Royal Air Education and Training Center (RAETC) in Woensdrecht (14 weeks), followed by the Technical Vocational Training of approximately 5 months as a Junior Officer Aviation Operations Support at the RAETC or at another Air Force base. After successfully completing your training, you will immediately start your career as a Junior Officer Aviation Operations Support with the Air Force.
