Job description

Introductory text

Do you want to work with the most advanced aircraft in the world: the F-35? And do you have an MBO diploma in metalworking, painting/lacquer processing, or (aircraft) engineering? Do more with your skills as a Junior Officer Maintenance Mechanic F-35 in the Air Force.

What you will do

As a Junior Officer Maintenance Mechanic F-35, you are responsible for the special coatings and structural materials of the F-35 that ensure the aircraft is difficult to detect on radar. We also call this stealth technology or low observable technology. You will be involved in performing inspections. Is the coating damaged or do you see signs of wear? Then you will accurately record this and repair or replace the damaged coatings and structural materials. You will also assist with other maintenance tasks and prepare the aircraft for a mission.

Pros of this position:

  • Salary: in addition to your gross base salary, our allowances and our favorable travel expenses, pension, and health insurance scheme provide a pleasant surprise in net terms;
  • Work atmosphere: nowhere else will you be part of such a close-knit team of colleagues as in the Defense Force;
  • Growth opportunities: besides being an employer, the Defense Force is also a large educational institution where you can follow (paid) training courses to grow personally and professionally.

Where you will work

You will work at the F-35 airbases Volkel or Leeuwarden, in the maintenance hangars and outdoors on the flight line. You will work together with maintenance mechanics who specialize in, among other things, coatings, aircraft systems, or avionics. You will also go on deployments and exercises abroad. Before you start working, you will first complete military training and vocational training at the Royal Air Education and Training Center (RAETC) in Woensdrecht.

This means the aircraft can perform various tasks simultaneously. It is suitable for all types of missions. It is a so-called 'fifth-generation fighter aircraft' with a more extensive sensor package than previous generations and stealth capabilities. This makes it less visible to (enemy) radar. The F-35 provides the armed forces with air superiority through its observation capabilities, the ability to share information, and greater precision in weapon deployment. The aircraft has 2 internal weapon bays, each with 2 hardpoints, and 7 external hardpoints. The middle one is only suitable for an (additional) external GAU-22/A fast-firing cannon. The outer 2 are only suitable for air-to-air missiles with a maximum weight of 135 kilograms. Bombs and missiles can be mounted on the other 4 hardpoints. The latter are for ground and air targets. Fuel lines are also connected to the inner 2 points, to possibly hang additional fuel tanks. To guide weapons and gather information, for example, the F-35 has various sensors. The AN/APG-81 radar, an advanced radar that transmits on different frequencies and is therefore more difficult to detect. An infrared seeker under the nose. The AN/AAS-37 warning system; various sensors distributed across the aircraft warn of approaching radar- and infrared-guided missiles. The latter missiles target the heat of the F-35's exhaust. The other type targets with its own radar. The stealth characteristics of the F-35 are best when the armament is under the skin of the aircraft. Depending on a mission and the threat, it is possible to mount weapons externally. Due to its stealth characteristics, the F-35 is more difficult to detect by enemy radar. This allows the aircraft to approach enemy targets more easily undetected. This gives the F-35 a significant advantage during air combat. Additionally, the aircraft can more easily evade enemy positions and radar systems.
