Do you want to lead a military team and work with specialized CBRN equipment? As a Non-Commissioned Officer CBRN Engineer, you combine leadership with specialized knowledge. You ensure that your team can act safely and effectively in the event of CBRN danger.

CBRN stands for Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear. A CBRN threat is not always visible, but can have major consequences for a military operation. That is why you will learn how to recognize these threats and how to act safely with your team.

If you are hired for this position, you will be appointed by the Ministry of Defence as a 'Non-Commissioned Officer CBRN Engineer'.

What you will do

As a Non-Commissioned Officer CBRN Engineer, you will lead a group of approximately ten soldiers within a CBRN unit. You can be assigned to the DIM platoon or the DECON platoon. Both platoons have their own task within CBRN operations and work closely together.

DIM stands for Detect, Identify, and Monitor. The DIM platoon investigates where the danger is, what substance it is, and how great the danger is. CBRN scouts will enter the area with specialized equipment and take measurements.

After the work of DIM, the DECON platoon takes action. DECON stands for decontamination, i.e., disinfection. The platoon decontaminates people, vehicles, and equipment that have come into contact with hazardous substances. This prevents the contamination from spreading further and ensures that people and equipment can be safely deployed again.

A CBRN incident can arise from combat operations, an accident with hazardous substances, or a deliberate use of CBRN agents. In all these situations, it is important that your team can act quickly, safely, and accurately.

As a non-commissioned officer, you will lead your team during these specialized activities. You will assign tasks, monitor safety, and intervene if necessary. You will check with measurements whether the work has been carried out safely and correctly.

You are also responsible for the training and deployability of your people. You will train your team and guide soldiers in their development. Together with your team, you will ensure the maintenance of vehicles and CBRN equipment, before, during, and after deployment.

The work requires responsibility, accuracy, and perseverance. You must dare to make decisions and intervene if something is not happening safely. You maintain an overview even under pressure.

Where you will work

You will work at 414 CBRN Defence Company of 41 Armoured Engineer Battalion in Oirschot, part of 13 Light Brigade. Or you will be assigned to 101 CBRN Defence Company of 11 Armoured Engineer Battalion in Wezep, part of 43 Mechanised Brigade.

You will participate in exercises at home and abroad. For example, you will train in Canada, the United States, Germany, and the Czech Republic. CBRN specialists can also be deployed during missions. This does not always happen as a complete CBRN unit.

After entering service, you will follow the training for non-commissioned officers at the School for Initial Officer Training (SIVO) of the Royal Military Academy in Ermelo. The first 10 weeks of the SIVO consist of the Basic Training Royal Army (BOKL). There you will learn the basic military skills you need as a soldier. Afterwards, your training as a non-commissioned officer will continue.

After the SIVO, you will follow the Technical Training (VTO) CBRN Engineer in Vught. There you will learn the specialized CBRN trade and prepare for your first role as a leader within a CBRN unit.

Do you not have a driver's license yet? Then you will follow additional driving training at the Driving Training and Education Centre in Oirschot.

The Royal Netherlands Army takes your preference for Oirschot or Wezep into account. Nevertheless, it may happen that you are assigned to the other CBRN unit for organizational reasons. You will find out where you will be working during your training.

Take the step We will train you

During the VTO CBRN Engineer in Vught, you will learn the specialized trade of a CBRN soldier. You will learn to work with protective equipment and specialized CBRN equipment.

You will learn how DIM and DECON cooperate within CBRN operations. You will also learn how to lead your team, ensure safety, and make decisions during a CBRN incident.

After completing this training, you will be ready for your first role as a Non-Commissioned Officer CBRN Engineer.

You will start as a squad leader within a CBRN unit. There you will gain experience as a leader and further develop yourself in the CBRN trade.

With the right experience and training, you can grow into other non-commissioned officer positions within CBRN. You will increasingly take responsibility for people, training, and deployment.

Do you want to grow further? Then you can advance to positions in the upper echelon of the non-commissioned officer domain with additional career training. Advancement towards adjutant is also possible.
