Introduction

Do you want to lead a military team and work with specialized CBRN equipment? As a Non-Commissioned Officer CBRN Engineering, you combine leadership with specialized knowledge. You ensure that your team can operate safely and effectively in the event of CBRN danger.

CBRN stands for Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear. A CBRN threat is not always visible, but can have major consequences for a military operation. That's why you'll learn how to recognize these threats and how to operate safely with your team.

Do you have an MBO 3 diploma? Then you can be trained through this route to become a squad commander within the lower ranks of the Army. You start in a phased career and gain experience as a military leader step by step.

If you are hired for this position, you will be appointed by the Ministry of Defence as a 'Non-Commissioned Officer CBRN Engineering'.

What you will do

As a Non-Commissioned Officer CBRN Engineering, you will lead a team of approximately ten soldiers within a CBRN unit. You may be assigned to the DIM platoon or the DECON platoon. Both platoons have their own task within CBRN operations and work closely together.

DIM stands for Detect, Identify, and Monitor. The DIM platoon investigates where the danger is, what substance it is, and how great the danger is. CBRN scouts will enter the area with specialized equipment and perform measurements.

After DIM's work, the DECON platoon comes into action. DECON stands for decontamination, meaning disinfection. The platoon decontaminates people, vehicles, and equipment that have come into contact with hazardous substances. This prevents the contamination from spreading further and ensures that people and equipment can be safely deployed again.

A CBRN incident can arise from combat operations, an accident with hazardous substances, or a deliberate use of CBRN agents. In all these situations, it is important that your team can act quickly, safely, and accurately.

As a non-commissioned officer, you will lead your team during these specialized activities. You will assign tasks, monitor safety, and intervene if necessary. You will check with measurements whether the work has been carried out safely and correctly.

You are also responsible for the training and deployability of your personnel. You will train your team and guide soldiers in their development. Together with your team, you will ensure the maintenance of vehicles and CBRN equipment, before, during, and after deployment.

The work requires responsibility, accuracy, and perseverance. You must dare to make decisions and intervene if something is not happening safely. You maintain an overview even under pressure.

Note: with an MBO 3 diploma, you can be trained as a squad commander in the lower ranks of the Army. You will be made proficient for your first position and will enter a phased career. This means that, without further development, you can perform functions that are phased within your weapon or service branch in the lower ranks. If you want to advance to a next position within this phased career, additional internal technical training is required.

If you have the ambition to advance further to a regular career, with opportunities for development towards adjutant? Then you can further develop and train internally over the years, and opt for entry into a regular career within the Army.

Please note: this classification is generic. Additional requirements may apply depending on your choice of weapon or service branch.

If you possess a VMBO GL/TL diploma, an MBO 4 diploma, or a transition certificate from HAVO 4 to 5? Then you can also start directly with the training for a regular career. This training is more extensive than the phased variant. You will also start as a squad commander in the lower ranks, but are deployable in positions labeled for a regular career due to the broader training.

You will therefore already meet the requirements for advancement to the upper ranks. By following career training and any technical upskilling, you can then relatively easily make the step to the upper ranks.

Where you will work

You will work at 414 CBRN Defense Company of 41 Armored Engineer Battalion in Oirschot, part of 13 Light Brigade. Or you will be assigned to 101 CBRN Defense Company of 11 Armored Engineer Battalion in Wezep, part of 43 Mechanized Brigade.

You will participate in exercises at home and abroad. For example, you will train in Canada, the United States, Germany, and the Czech Republic. CBRN specialists can also be deployed during missions. This does not always happen as a complete CBRN unit.

After entering service, you will follow the training for non-commissioned officer at the School for Initial Officer Training (SIVO) of the Royal Military School in Ermelo. The first 10 weeks of SIVO consist of the Basic Training Royal Army (BOKL). There you will learn the basic military skills you need as a soldier. After that, your training as a non-commissioned officer will continue.

After SIVO, you will follow the Technical Training (VTO) CBRN Engineering in Vught. There you will learn the specialized CBRN trade and prepare for your first position as a squad commander within a CBRN unit.

If you do not yet have a driver's license, you will also follow the driving training at the Training and Education Center for Driving in Oirschot.

The Royal Army takes your preference for Oirschot or Wezep into account. However, it may happen that you are assigned to the other CBRN unit for organizational reasons. You will be informed where you will work during your training.

During the VTO CBRN Engineering in Vught, you will learn the specialized trade of a CBRN soldier. You will learn to work with protective equipment and specialized CBRN equipment.

You will learn how DIM and DECON work together within CBRN operations. You will also learn how to lead your team, monitor safety, and make decisions during a CBRN incident.

After completing this training, you will be ready for your first position as a Non-Commissioned Officer CBRN Engineering.

You will start as a squad commander within a CBRN unit. There you will gain experience as a leader and further develop your skills in the CBRN field.
With an MBO 3 diploma, you start in a phased career in the lower ranks of the Army. You will be prepared for your first position and can then perform functions that belong to this route within your weapon or service branch.
Do you want to advance to a next position within this phased career? Then you will follow additional internal technical training.
Do you want to switch to the regular non-commissioned officer career later? Then you can further develop and follow additional training. From the regular career, you can advance to positions in the upper ranks and eventually further develop within the non-commissioned officer domain, for example towards adjutant.
