Then Maritime Officer with a specialization in War Studies is absolutely for you.

This is what you will do

As a Maritime Officer in the Navy, you are responsible for the deployment of a complete naval ship: for navigation, safety, the deployment of weapon systems, and the use of communication equipment. You will lead the bridge team. Later, your work will primarily take place in the Command Center, the place where all combat information is received and where decisions are made during operations. From here, you play an important role in the deployment of the ship, the crew, and weapon systems. Because the deployment of the ship is always the responsibility of the Maritime Officer, only Officers of the Maritime Service Corps can command a ship.

But first, you will of course complete your training. You start as a Midshipman – that's what we call a naval officer in training – at the Royal Netherlands Naval College (KIM) in Den Helder with the general maritime officer training and the technical training. You will follow your bachelor's degree in War Studies at the Royal Military Academy (KMA) in Breda. This program is the only one in the Netherlands that fully focuses on the study of war studies issues. International law, international relations, and strategy and tactics form its core. During your studies, you will examine how changing international power relations, new technology, and the information age influence the application of force. Furthermore, attention is paid to lessons from the past and to the dilemmas faced by military decision-makers. Additionally, you will continuously develop your leadership qualities. Through a minor, you can specialize in Human Resource Management, Military Legal Sciences, or Human Factors and Safety. During your 5.5-year training, you will also go to sea to experience working and living together with your teammates on board.

This is where you will work

For the first few years after your training, you will work on one of the naval ships. Initially, you will often be on the bridge, where the ship is steered. Later, you will also work in the Command Center, and after a few years, you will alternate sea assignments with shore-based positions.
