As a Naval Officer, you are responsible for the deployment of a complete ship: for navigation, the deployment of weapon systems, and the use of communication equipment.

What you will do

As a Naval Officer, you will primarily be responsible for the navigation and safety of the ship and will lead the bridge team. Later, your work will mainly take place in the Command Center, the place where all combat information is received and where decisions are made during operations. From here, you play an important role in the deployment of the ship, the crew, and weapon systems. Because the deployment of the ship is always the responsibility of the Naval Officer, only Officers of the Naval Corps can command a ship.

Where you will work

Before you can actually sail, you will start as a Midshipman – that's what we call a Navy officer in training – at the Royal Netherlands Naval College (KIM) in Den Helder for the maritime military training, the technical training, and the joint officer training, which together last about 15 months. In the first few years after your training, you will work on one of the Navy ships. Initially, you will often be on the bridge, where the ship is steered. Later, you will also work in the Command Center, and after a few years, you will alternate sea duties with shore-based positions.
